Really nice place, amazing panoramic views. Worth the walk up the hill. Take a break and have a pastry in the cafe.

No need to go into the main palace buildings or the structure at the top of the hill. Instead, enjoy walking through the marvelous park and jogging paths, which are free. Of course, this applies only to the summer visits (I came in June).

Take the (not too steep) climb up to the Gloriette and you are rewarded with a magnificent view of the Schönbrunn Gardens, the Palace and indeed some of the rest of Vienna from above. There is a cafè inside.

No, you cannot walk around the gardens or up the hill 24/7. There are opening and closing hours for the park as well. Go to their site and you can see what the working hours are, all depends on the season. The parks are free.
