Last Saturday, July 21, 2012 we spent the afternoon at the Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg. In order to buy postcards, we stepped into what was thought was an adjacent shop but which turned out to be the gift shop of the Baroque Museum. At least this was open on a Saturday afternoon. Not much else was. Though we were able to pick up an assortment of postcards as a booklet or two, we were unable to communicate with the attendant behind the counter about the admission fee for touring the museum. It amazed me when touring Austria and Germany how much trouble we had communicating the with the locals because we don't speak German. Fortunately I got a peek at the paintings through the glass doors.

The museum itself is very interesting, bust I must warn that the opening period is not always as stated. The first I tried to enter I was not allowed as the museum closed too early as it had to be 'prepared' for a concert that evening. Luckily we stayed 3 nights so I could return the next day. The museum itself is, as said, very interesting but to me personally the tempory exhibition was even better (all about the marionettentheater, its used background attributes and so on). If a next time in Salzburg I will definately return to this museum. It is located in the Orangery of the Mirabell castle garden. On display are: former collection of Kurt Ross Archers (139 oil paintings, 42 wood and clay models and graphic collection. Artists from Italy, Germany, France, Netherlands, the former Austrian monarchy (Franz Anton Maulbertsch, Paul Rubens, Gianbattista Tiepolo, Alessandro Algardi). Designs for wall or Panel painting, etching press and sculptures. Tecnical terms and stages of a work of art are explained.
