I'm so glad I found this place online. As luck would have it they were doing a performance of Der Nussknacker the night I arrived in Salzburg and surprisingly they posted my ticket to me in the UK. The Marionetten Theatre is very easy to find with lots of memorabelia to look at though I pretty much headed straight in to me seat. The performance was basically miraculous - how do they do it!! There was a transalation of the story projected on the wall at the start of each half, and then you watch each scene unfold, the movement of the puppets is so realistic. So many ovations at the end and when the top curtain goes up you get to see the amazing puppeteers. I would say definitely go and see a performance - you wont regret it.

They somehow retained the integrity of this musical, eventhough it is pared down from the original. The serious material was still all there, mixed in with all the joyful moments most keep in their hearts when thinking of SoM.
First and foremost though, the artistry blew my mind, and the curtain call literally took my breath away.
I was also fascinated how they staged certain songs that just require someone to "act". They managed to pull it off finding ingenious moments, without it becoming suddenly a parody of the original piece.
Incredible! ...coming from a New Yorker who sees Broadway shows all of the time.

What an absolutely delightful, one-of-a-kind experience. The mixture of actual people in perspective with the marionettes of different sizes and depths on the stage created such an interesting show. I especially loved seeing the people at the top of the stage, and how they worked together to make it happen.

Located within the Festung Hohensalzburg (fortress) and an eye opener to the art and skills of string puppets. A worthwhile tour of the World of string puppets when visiting the fortress even though we did not have the time to see the puppet show. Cheers.

Amazing! One mark off only because a family brought in their baby and they stayed throughout the first half of the performance even while it cried! Very inconsiderate! They must have been asked to leave at half time as we had a blissful 2nd half.
Perhaps the staff could stop them from entering next time?

We are happy, blueybrit, that you enjoyed the performance. As it is very rare that parents enter with babies and if, they are very considerate and leave the performance when the baby gets loud. We apologize for the inconviniences.

We viewed a showing of, "The Magic Flute." The detail on the puppets were amazing. We were impressed by the craftsmanship that goes into the making of the puppets, the skill of the puppeteers and the lifelike movements of the puppets. My husband went to the show with me reluctantly but afterwards said that it was one of his favorite events in Salzburg. I wish we could have seen all of the performances that were offered.

Better than expected. Would suggest better enforcement of people who use flash cameras during the performance

What languages are the subtitles for The Magic Flute?

Scene summaries were projected on the side walls in at least 4 or 5 languages, one which was English. Sorry, I can't remember what the other languages were--thinking Italian and/or French plus a few others.

Will it be close in September? I checked the official website and there is no show the whole month!
Wir werden demnächst in die Zauberflöte gehen und freuen uns schon sehr auf das Marionetten Theater . Gibt es dort eine Bekleidungsvorschrift ? Lässig leger , schick oder sehr fein ? Was trägt man dort ?

We went to this theater this summer after visiting the town and it was hot outside. So we wore casual clothes and it was ok.

Hi,
We're planning to take our young sons to watch The Sound of Music this May. Would like to know which would be the best rows to try to get seats in from the viewpoint of our children. They are 7 & 9 years. Would the first row be too upfront ?
Thank you,
Geraldine H

Hi Roshan, yes, i think the first row would be too close. I think the first row of the second section would be good as there is the aisle in between. So there will be no one blocking the view.
