I was expecting something bigger and better. Not much of an "old town".
Yes, there are shops and restaurants and an old tramcar but nothing extraordinary.
Up at Schlossmuseum Linz is nice, the Cathedral is also nice , the Martinstor and Friedrichstor are nice as well but I was really expecting more from this old city by the old Danube. Not much to fill a full day with historical attractions.
Shops and restaurants in the main square are also expensive. We had dinner at a Greek restaurant in the main square, nothing special again. A special event was a group of protestants singing and praying in the heavy rain in the middle of the square.

On the good side: my daughter found the Zahnmuseum Linz, the History of Dentistry Museum, glad to see someone was happy, she is in the business.

A wonderful lively square with a choice of restaurants and cafes. City sight seeing trains and old style Postilingberg trains depart from here. There was a flea market here on the Saturday we visited.

We visited the main square/City Center of Linz during their Christmas market in December. This square is one of the largest enclosed squares in Austria, it was built in 1230, the surrounding buildings are in Baroque and Renaissance style. The Danube river runs by the square.

This Christmas market was smaller than others we visited, it was not as commercial. We had some exceptional small sausages with sauerkraut made by Koettstorfer.

We stopped in Linz as part of a Viking Cruise. My husband and I walked to the Alt Stadt after arriving. The walk along the river was paved, pleasant and pretty. We found a small dance party in the square which was a bonus!
We enjoyed the Viking excursion but then branched off to visit several churches and the cathedral and found a spot for some Linzer torte and coffee. Lovely town!

The central square is a perfect place to relax with a beer or coffee. Many shops also line the square catering to whatever you wish to purchase. The statue in the middle is the perfect accent.

Full of cafes and restaurants, this is a nice place to have a coffee and a Linzertorte. There is a central Plague Column, as well as a train to head up to the Postlingberg. There is also a nice little flea market here on Saturday mornings.

The square is very attractive and very busy--full of people and street cars!

The monument is to the survivors of the plague (one of many on the Danube), or it is giving thanks for surviving--I am not sure which! The giving thanks story makes the most sense--it was a terrible plague that almost eviscerated Europe. Ones changes of survival appears to be dependent on having "good" genes or a lot of luck! In either case, the monument may have been an inspiration to all!

If you are on a cruise, the docks are very close to the square and it is easy to find.

The main square in Linz offers everything you need, there are coffees, restaurants and some shops. But it also has some beautiful Baroque buildings and a column.

I really like this place. In Winter there is a nice christmas market.

Hauptplatz, main square and market place of Linz’s Altstadt, is the historical center of the city. The proximity to The River Danube makes Linz an important port of trades. The 20 meters high Baroque style white marble Holy Trinity Column (Dreifaltigkeitssäule) occupies center of the Hauptplatz; a religious symbol as a protector for the City.
Majority of the historical Baroque architecture buildings are congregated within the main square area and short walking distance from it. Among them are the twin towers Old Basilica (Alter Dom) and Old City Hall (Stadt Linz). The Linz Tourist Information Office is connected next to the Old City Hall facing the Square. In the middle of the Hauptplatz are tram platforms. Linz’s main tram lines and Pöstlingberg Bahn line transfer locals and tourists to here from other parts of the town and then cross over to the other side of the Danube or Pöstlingberg Hill. Several restaurants, bars and cafes cater needs of tourists and locals. During the warm season people come here to enjoy outdoor dining or sit around the Trinity Column to social and relax. Short walk away is the harbor park to the Danube River. Major outdoor events and festivities are held within and Main Square or nearby during the summer and the autumn, as well as the Christmas Markets in the winter. The Linz Castle (Linzer Schloss) is a short walk up to the hill where you have panorama views of the Danube River and Pöstlingberg Hill. The famous Linzer Tort bakery shop Kuk Hofbackerei is in a small alley behind the main square, nearby Old Dom, on Pfarrplazt where you can enjoy highly recommended local specialty Linzer torts which was named after the City of Linz.

It was in this square, on the balcony of the Ates Rathaus, where Adolf Hitler made his famous speech declaring the Greater German Reich. The date was 12th May 1938.

Adolf Hitler regarded Linz as his home town. Indeed he lived for some years on the third floor of 31 Humboldtstrasse, just a short walk away. Some of his family are buried inb the churchyard of the church on the other side of the river, just behind the New Modern Art Museum. There are no plaques or mention in any guide books of these facts which is a shame as these are facts of history.
