The Tarxien Megalithic Complex is located in Paola, in the east of Malta. Discovered in 1913, today the site is perfectly maintained. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a religious complex made up of four temples built between 3000 and 2500 BC. During archaeological excavations, sharp objects and animal bones were discovered which would suggest that funeral rites with animal sacrifices were practiced inside them. A visit not to be missed because it is something unique, entry costs 6 euros.

Fantastic experience. Don’t skip the interesting museum exhibit at the start. Free downloadable audio narration. Heritage Malta does a superb job with all these sites. Pathways are not steep but trekking sticks come in handy. It’s a good longish walk to the second site.

If only Stonehenge were as well presented and as accessible as this attraction.

You start of watching a 5d film of the site which details its history from creation to being lost back to being discovered again.

Your then free to walk around the museum and then the site itself which is covered by a massive cover.

This place is really interesting and a credit to Malta. If Stonehenge were anywhere near as interactive, reasonably priced and educational as this then we would have something as good to be proud of.

Very rough surfaces access is limited and the fifth temple impossible to see because of steep hill and boulders that are not negotiable for wheelchair or scooter.

We did this as a shore tour while sailing on the Norwegian Spirit. It was our second visit to Malta and we really wanted to see the temples. My favourite temple was Hagar Qim as it was very peaceful with beautiful ocean views. Tarxien Temples was in the city and although was just as interesting it did not have the same atmosphere. Our guide was very knowledgeable and interesting and she was well spoken in English. I know it may look like a pile of rocks to some but to us the history of these places was amazing. Also enjoyed the underground cave.
Lots of walking and steps and it is hot.
Would not recommend for people with more then moderate mobility impairments.
Take water and a hat - my fold out fan also came in handy.

The guide will amaze you with his language skills easily switching from English to Italian to French. The trip's well organised: you'll learn something about the history whilst on the coach & again at the temple site. I was impressed by the fact that he was considerate enough to ensure we were always in the shade before he began. We learnt of possible theories for the existence of the temple & talked about the size & weight of the largest monoliths.I also liked the fact that we could walk into the temples. Explanatory boards gave further information in situ. The tour was relaxed: when you wanted you could walk down to the bottom of the site to visit the next one. The cave visit was an extra bonus with its excabation of sedimentary rocks: the strata of animal bones was revealing - both hippopotamus and elephant bones were found there. There's more information in the museum, complete with animal ossiary. The only downside if you are travelling from the north of the island to the sites is the state of Malta's roads - boneshaking!

We bought a more than half day tour first to Ghar Dalam. Interesting but not exciting. A giant quite long cave with series of excavations of the old bones, many of them are shown in the museum. On the other hand the Hagar Quim was an amazing place and Indeed one of the "must see" atractions in Malta. Illustrative introduction and explanation was made in the main building at the beginning and than we went to the site covered by big porch. The guide explained us the way / logic of the construction and meaning of ingividual "rooms". A little bit more preserved and understandable is the next place - Mnajdra. It is smaller but somehow more compact. At the end of the excursion we were just thinking about how the megalithic people could not only build but first and foremost create such large temples. Very much recommended !!

The 2 temples are about a 25 min drive from Valletta. These are 2 temple structures aged approx 5000 years old. There is a video presentation when you enter, and this is very good, giving you an good idea of the history, how the temples would have looked like... Etc.
They have done a pretty good job reconstructing part of theses temples, but not much seems to be known about them.
I found it interesting, but not up to the standard of other things to see in Malta.

We travelled independently to the temples on the local buses which dropped us right at the end of the short lane. The admission fee includes two temples and a museum which explains the history of the site. To try to imagine how life was 7,000 years ago and what went on in these amazing buildings is mind boggling. The temples are set on a cliff top overlooking the sea and surrounded by a rocky landscape covered in beautiful wild plants.Well worth a visit one of the highlights of our stay.

We went on a tour of the prehistoric temples but not sure the tour name. It cost 9euros each which was fine. The problem was, at each attraction there was an entrance fee (not included in tour price and not expected at 9euros for a half day) the admission prices were not extortionate but it was 20 mins and then on to the next place....25 mins there then off again so you had very little time to see temples and museum. Good trip but more time needed at each visit.
