We were very taken with Mdina, and we entered through the main gate. It's quite a gate, but it's the city that's the real attraction, with the gate being a welcome bonus.

Although we went round again on foot, we delighted in first doing a tour in a horse-drawn carriage, despite being non-horse-lovers.

You can still see where the original plain gateway was, to the right of the towering baroque entrance to the old city.

This impressive gate is after the walkway over the large moat area which surrounds the walls of the city which cover a large area. It is free to walk in and well worth the visit

The gate represents the main entrance to Mdina citadel and as such is part of the whole impression of the structure.

Mdina is truly a beautiful part of Malta, with cobbled, winding streets and historical architecture. There are amazing views of the island from the ramparts of the old city.
