Perlan is a Nature Exploratorium and one of Reykjavik’s main landmarks. You can learn all about Icelandic nature in a fun and interactive ways at Perlan's museum. Some highlights include a real indoor ice cave, hands-on exhibits, a life-size bird cliff full of life, and a show about volcanoes. There is also a Planetarium dome theatre where the northern lights virtually dance all around you. --- The 360 views from Perlan are spectacular in all directions. - Tina DShelburne, Canada28 contributionsPerlan is a must see/do for anyone who like to learn new things but have fun at the same time.I had booked this a month before my cruise as it looked really interesting and was not provided as an excursion through the cruise line. It did not disappoint! It was quite the adventure getting there by myself from Reykjavic on the public transit, and even more so getting back to the ship, but at least I can say I did it! Everything in the museum is basically self guided, but was really very interesting and unlike anything I had seen before. The ice cave, the northern lights show and the observation deck were the highlights. I'm really happy to say I have visited Perlan!Dear Tina, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. The shuttle bus does not run anymore from the Harpa building so we walked there and back. Walkable from downtown, around 2k. Food is expensive in Iceland and Perlan is at the top end. The highlight was the Northern Lights show and the Ice Cave - both were incredible and worth visiting just for those alone!! There’s also a 360 degree viewing platform at the top to look over the city. They also have a shop and ice cream parlour too. All staff were lovely and happy to answer any questions we had. Amazing technology in there, too! We walked from downtown Reykjavík, which took about 40 minutes. We enjoyed the various exhibits and took our time walking through them. We went on a weekday, which may have been why it wasn’t crowded and there were no lines for the exhibits.Dear Kim, Thank you for writing to us about your day. We got there early and were able to enjoy the lava show, the ice tunnel and the planetarium. I was massively impressed with all three. The staff were lovely - friendly and helpful. The aurora show was probably my favourite part, which is in the planetarium and lasts about 20 minutes. The ice cave is good and the small film about volcanoes is also interesting. There is also a 360 viewing deck where you can take some great photos and the cafe on the top floor is a nice place to relax and take in the views with a drink. Brilliant few hours and well worth the admission price ( pre booked tickets). Lava show, Aurora light show and ice cave visit. Interactive glacier exhibit and a zing 360 panoramic views from the top of the museum! Lovely cafe right on the top floor under the glass roof to enjoy the views over Reykjavík . We booked this trip on the saturday for the monday we were leaving. As time was limited we only wanted a fairly short and flexible option. The lady at the tourist office where we booked advised us this was a good option.
We were given an entrance ticket and told to pick the free shuttle bus up at the harbour outside the concert hall. Bus stop number 5. We were told the buses ran every hour between 10 and 6 and we could spend as long as we wanted or were able to at the museum.
It was bitter cold but we wanted to make the most of our last day in Reykjavik so after breakfast we set off. We had hoped to catch the 10 am bus but as it was just after 10 when we arrived we thought we had missed that bus. So rather than wait in the bitter wind we went inside the concert hall for a look around.
At 10.45 we went out to wait for the bus. We saw lots of buses but none for the Perlan. At 11.35 we gave up as time was against us and we were frozen cold. I had tried to call the number on our ticket but couldn't understand the Icelandic language so we headed back to the tourist office.
We spoke to the lady who booked it who asked had we phoned them and then she phoned them. She then had to email them to try and find out what had happened and if she could refund us. We waited in the tourist office who offered us a cup of black coffee and eventually a man who seemed more senior called us over.
By this time it was around 12.30 so we had already lost the morning! He wanted to know where we were staying and what time we were being collected for the airport. In fairness he offered to give us money for a taxi to the Perlan but by then we were short on time and didn't want to be stressing and risk getting back late plus maybe not seeing all we had paid for. He said we would be able to get the bus back but we were not reassured given it hadn't turned up to collect us in the first place!
No explanation was given as to why the bus hadn't turned up but I read afterwards online that there are only 19 seats on it and it collects from two other hotels as well as the harbour stop. Maybe it was full so didn't stop...we don't know! To add insult to injury whilst we were outside our hotel waiting for our airport transfer the Perlan shuttle bus pulled in and collected a lady? We had not been offered a hotel pick up and our hotel is not shown on line as a pick up point???
Eventually the tour office refunded us and I have an e mail confirming this but he did not seem happy to do this even though it was us who had missed out on visiting the Perlan!
We then spent the couple of hours we had left just wandering the streets and having something to eat.
We were very disappointed and this was not a good end to an otherwise lovely visit to Reykjavik!

I am sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with the transport to Perlan and appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. It is important to address the issues that you mentioned in your review and clear up some misunderstandings as well as some misinformation.
First off, you can see the bus schedule on our website with all the essential information about the transport we provide. On the day of your visit, our shuttle driver picked up all our guests from Harpa according to schedule. No other guest reported any similar problems. Therefore I assume that after you missed the 10 am bus, you waited at the wrong stop. I am surprised that you waited another 35 minutes after 11 pm and did not try to contact us directly. We offer several options from calling our main phone number to a live chat on our website and sending an email.
If you call our main phone number, you can hear a short introduction in the Icelandic language, and then "Welcome to Perlan, Wonders of Iceland, press 5 for English." We are then happy to help our guests with any questions.
Our shuttle bus is a courtesy bus that offers guests a ride between Perlan and Harpa. There is misinformation on your part as you say that the bus stops at other hotels. As you can see online, the shuttle stops only at Hotel Natura on the way from Harpa to Perlan. Therefore, there are no other guests already on the bus from Harpa.
We want everyone to have a positive experience at Perlan. I understand that the accumulation of all the incidents mentioned above that happened on your last day left you disappointed. However, I don't think your rating is reasonable, as it doesn't reflect the experience you had here with us. Like I said before, no other guests experienced any issues on this day.
You are welcome to send us an email if you have any further questions. Getting a review only makes it very difficult for us to sort out what happened. I am again sorry that you couldn't experience Wonders of Iceland and hope that we can welcome you back to Perlan next time.

We came to Perlan on a free day, it was recommended to us from a tour guide. It was a 30 minute walk from Fosshotel, but a free shuttle ran from the opera house (with a prebooked ticket or if you bought the ticket on the bus).
We headed to the cafe first, the food was good and not too heavily priced and had a good selection of food (egg and avocado on toast, burgers, chips, cake, salads). There is a restaurant with 3 course meals available. The views were great of the city and airport, it was cosy as there was many storms which had closed the airport that day.
We spent £55.13 (8,980 isk) for muesem entry. It started with a planetarium experience of the northern lights, there was an ice cave which was good and lots of interesting facts on Iceland, nature and glaciers (lots of information on the effects of climate change).

An enjoyable visit can last up to half a day if you engage with all our exhibits, enjoy the views and sit down to have a bite at the lovely café / restaurant at Perlan's top floor.

We visited twice during our visit to Iceland. The first time was for New Years Eve, we parked at around 10.30pm where there was plenty of spaces left, parking was free and we could use the toilets inside even though it was closed for ticket holders.
We then walked via the footpath to watch the fireworks on New Year's Eve. The show Iceland put on is immense. You can't imagine how many fireworks there actually was!
We then returned on New Year's Day, and parked for free again, to get inside is free and we visited for daytime views of the city, you now have to pay to use the observation deck which is a shame as it was free back in 2014 and 2016! We didn't use any of the paid attractions, but still worth the visit!

I am happy to hear that you decided to revisit Perlan after the New Years Party.
In 2016/2017, the building gained a new role, operated by a private company, aiming to create unique nature spectacles. The observation deck is part of our Wonders of Iceland exhibit and free for ticket holders. For other visitors only visiting the observation deck, a fee is required, as for all other exhibits in the house.
Therefore, it is no "shame" to charge a fee for the deck, but rather a necessary step to be able to maintain the building and facilities that thousands of visitors use every year, by only coming to the observation deck.
Unfortunately, we couldn´t spark your excitement for our exploratorium. Our real Ice Cave, the highlight in our exhibitions that the majority of guests get very excited about, is made of 350 tons of ice & snow. Recreating this natural phenomenon gives visitors the chance to feel, touch, and explore a cave, without traveling to and hiking on a glacier. Moreover, our museum offers stunning views to our full-size bird cliff, and magical northern lights in our Planetarium to powers of volcanoes and creatures in Icelandic water.

I visited here 6 and a half years ago and it was good then , but on my visit this last week we were really impressed with just how good this museum is. The show at the Planetarium is really well done and was enjoyed by myself , husband and daughter . We were also extremely impressed with the exhibits and displays in the museum . The ice cave for us was perhaps the highlight . It was a great experience. The cafe has great views and although it’s a bit expensive we particularly enjoyed the seafood soup and a piece of lemon skyr cheesecake .. just delicious . If you enjoy photography the observation deck is great for taking photos and panoramic shots of Reykjavik and the area around . We also lived watching the small planes and helicopters come and go at Reykjavik airport . The gift shop is also good and has some really good quality gifts and stylish cards . It was an excellent way to spend a sunny winter’s morning in Reykjavik. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Beautiful building inside too

Áróra, our multi-award-winning planetarium show, is the only northern lights experience of its kind in the world. Guided by Aurora, the goddess of dawn, this cinematic adventure invites the audience to join the dance of these mystical lights over Icelandic landscapes. And did you know that our ice cave is real? It is made from 350 tons of Icelandic ice and ash, showing you various features of full-size glaciers. We keep our ice cave extra cold so that all the scientific wonders you see inside stay frozen and magical. It provides a unique insight into the mysteries of glaciers. We really love our ice cave as well!
We are also fond of our 360° Views over Reykjavík & all around! How nice that you had the chance to see the planes and helicopters! The local airport is right next to Perlan and is often fun to watch. As you said, we have such a beautiful cafe at the 5th floor and it’s the perfect spot to grab a cup of coffee or a slice of skyr cheesecake and spent hours and hours looking through the dome so you can enjoy the stunning views of Reykjavik :)

Perlan has been the best Museum we have visited in Reykjavik!
The ticket (£30 per adult) provided admission to all areas about Volcanoes, Ice, Water and of course the Northern Lights. These areas are interactive and informative and there is an ice cave to explore too!
The observation viewing deck gives a fantastic view of the whole area - we were lucky to be there on a clear day, which meant we had views in all directions for miles. There is also a cafe where you can take in the breathtaking views and have a bite to eat.
We felt the best part of the exhibition was the film shown in the Planetarium about the Aurora. The show outlines the Aurora’s history and the science behind the formations. It was much better than the Aurora Reykjavik - The Northern Lights Centre.
If you are thinking of visiting any museums in Reykjavik, this is the one.
The ticket (£30 per adult) provided admission to all areas about Volcanoes, Ice, Water and of course the Northern Lights. These areas are interactive and informative and there is an ice cave to explore too!
The observation viewing deck gives a fantastic view of the whole area - we were lucky to be there on a clear day, which meant we had views in all directions for miles. There is also a cafe where you can take in the breathtaking views and have a bite to eat.

We had a nice experience visiting the Perlan. We especially enjoyed a light lunch at the cafe on the top floor and being able to eat while enjoying the view. The museum and exhibits were interesting and nicely done but were VERY expensive compared to museums of equal quality in other parts of the world. However, as written in the title, it is hard to imagine missing the experience of visiting this location in Reykjavic.

Dear Weism, thank you for sharing your experience with us. I am really glad to read that you enjoyed your visit at Perlan, and the view from the café: it can be quite spectacular when the weather is clear. To see all the mountains around Reykjavík, the Atlantic ocean, and many landmarks while enjoying a 360 degree walk around the glass dome is truly unique.
Our full experience is a great way to explore Icelandic nature through interactive displays, cinematic experience, and more spectacles. It gives you insights into the mysteries of volcanoes, glaciers, wildlife, and takes you on a journey through our solar system, to discover the science behind the fantastic Northern Lights. We visited the Perlan on our 3rd day in Reykjavik when we had seen all other things we had planned to and looking for something to entertain us for a few hours, we ended up there for 2 hours max.
We went to the cafe at the top to warm up first and it was a lovely setting but we were very lucky to get a table as it was crowded. We also enjoyed the planetarium show and ice cave but did feel that the entrance fee was very expensive for what it was.

Perlan is a must-visit landmark and nature exploratorium where you can feel, see, and discover all the natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. It is a great way to explore this unique island if you don´t get the chance to drive all around the country.
Our real Ice Cave, the highlight in our exhibitions that the majority of guests get very excited about, is made of 350 tons of ice & snow. An enjoyable visit at Perlan can last up to half a day if you engage with all our exhibits, enjoy the views and sit down to have a bite at the lovely café / restaurant at Perlan's top floor.
We wish to offer these unique nature adventures for prices that compare to similar experiences in Iceland.
Hopefully, we will see you again to explore more of Iceland's nature at Perlan.

The entrance to Perlan was about £25 each. That was for the second priced ticket which didn't include the northern lights planetarium
It's a nice building but we just felt it was a bit expensive for what was there. Even taking into account that Iceland is expensive. The ice tunnel was good as was the volcano and other info
The cafe was very expensive
You do get really good views from the viewing platform but it was so windy that we couldn't really walk round it
One other hopefully useful info. When you enter the wonders of iceland exhibition there is a rack to hang your coat - which I used - the only thing is you get to the ice tunnel before you get back to where your coat is and the ice tunnel is something like -10. They do have sleeveless jackets you can put on but it would still be better to have your own coat so either don't hang it up or go and get it before you go to ice tunnel

I am sorry to hear that you couldn't enjoy your visit to the fullest. Did you know that it is possible to buy tickets for both experiences (Planetarium & Wonders of Iceland) in one? The combo-ticket is relatively the most inexpensive option and would have cost you less than £4 to upgrade.
I understand that it was hard for you to appreciate the views from the deck while it was windy. However, stormy days are quite common at this time of the year. Something, travelers should always consider when they plan their trip to Iceland. No one can change the weather :) I recommend making the best out of it.
I am surprised to hear about the part you mention about the coat rack. In the past, it was no problem for guests to get their coat before going inside the cave. Everyone is welcome to walk around the exhibits freely. Once you have your ticket, you can also walk in and out as many times as you like.

Amazing space. You can see the glass dome from far off even if you quite can't see how to get to it! There's several huge tanks that house the exhibition space, with the dome on top. Covers early geology and geological forces from millions to thousands to a thousand years ago as it relates to the formation of Iceland. Lots of screens, large and small, interspersed with sitting places. Lots of info on fauna and flora with life sized stuffed ones, including a polar bear who meandered off an ice floe onto the North of the island.
There's a brilliant Ice Cave you can go into and experience, doors are opened to that every 15 minutes or so.
There's a Planetarium that explains the formation of the Aurora. Very interesting, 25 minutes long (its under half an hour) in a good sized auditorium.
Top floor, 5th, lovely open space under the glass dome for refreshments, there's a café and a restaurant, bistro style rather than 'cheffy'. Spacious surroundings with fab views to linger in. There's Ice Cream Parlour on 4th floor, go all out and have 3 flavours for 990 isk, about £6 and try the black Turkish Pepper, very slightly liquorice-ish. The outside balcony is also on 4th floor, amazing 360° views over Reykjavik and the waterfront. And ...if you're so inclined you can jump a zip line from the 4 th too. From 2 pm in the afternoon, weekdays, suspect its earlier at the weekends.
The cost is 4490 isk, £26 for an adult, but you could spend the whole day there. Be aware, there are no lockers to store your things, but you can hang your coat up and hope for the best. You don't need to go to a tour company to book tickets, I stood in line for 2 minutes, mid-week.
Its been open 20 years, but it seems no thought has been given to arriving by foot and bus. Nearest bus stop is No.18 on main road, Bustaovegur, which is very difficult to cross (Aug '21). No bus actually calls in at Perlan! Unless you're on a tour. And, there's no straightforward way to Perlan from the bus stop, sort of meander in general direction thro bushes to find windy paths. Hmm.

A really excellent place if you want to learn something about the geology, flora and fauna and aurora of this beautiful but strange island.
A lot of of clever technology is used and so would fascinate children. A great place to visit at any time but particularly if the weather is bad.
WE did not really know what to expect before we visited but were very pleasantly surprised and it was definitely the best of the various museums and attractions we visited in Reykjavik.
Tere are several attractions within what is really 4 enormous storage tanks, so you can choose what you want to do. We chose the ticket for all. and i hinkthey were all equally interesting. Children wil be particularly intersted in the "ice cave" in the basement.
The top has a 360 degree views over Reykjavik and the great thing if you are a photographer you will not be shooting through glass. There is also a lovely restaurant in the top, but BEWARE it is VERY expensive. We just had a couple of coffees and 2 bowls of soup with bread and it came to around £30!

Hello,
Perlan is situated on Reykjavik‘s highest hill, close to the center.
To get to Perlan, you can use a car, taxi, public bus, walk or cycle. The public bus has a regular schedule every day and buses no 18 and 13 stop the closest to Perlan.

The 360* views during the day are beautiful, especially if it’s clear. I think there might be too much ambient light from the city to see the aurora well. The ice cream shop on the top floor is worth a stop, too.

Hi, I just wanted clarity on what time slot to select. If I book tickets for the 13:00 time slot, can we have dinner at the restaurant and perhaps visit the bar after the tour? Or can we only stay for a finite period of time?

There were no time restrictions for when you are in the museum, apart for the obvious open and closing times. There are a number of special exhibits that you queue for but just join the smallest queue as plenty of time to see everything ( only takes a few minutes max)

Hello, unfortunately, there is no shuttle bus.
Walking from the city center of Reykjavik takes about 30 minutes.
A taxi takes about 5 minutes from the center.
The local bus has a regular schedule every day and buses no 18 and 13 stop the closest to Perlan.
