- kekenuLuxembourg City, Luxembourg835 contributionsWhauuuu amazing Icelandic sculpturVery interesting icelandic artist. His work deserved to be visited. The oark is free, the inside expo is 1500kr. Take in consideration the house has been build before the church. The archi of the Church collaborated for the house design in 1916. If you visit the church you can't miss this place. Check on YouTube the video 4hOXa3MKPnU. For svifi fans, maybe he has influenced G.R. Ginger, designer of AlienVisited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 3, 2023

It is located right outside the Hallgrimskirkja Church. Jonssonar is famous in Iceland, but not as well known elsewhere. His style is complex, old and new. We didn't see the gardens due to the cold and darkness, but there is plenty to see inside. They also present a few pieces by local modern sculptors that we found provacative.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 6, 2023
- Guide084911Newburyport, Massachusetts2 contributionsUnique sculpture museum well worth the visitThis is a wonderful and unique collection of early 1900s art deco sculptures. You can wander around the three floors at your own pace. Each floor has a new, surprising, and amazing sculpture. The museum is located right across from the cathedral.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 20, 2024

I was impressed by the external architecture, which can be admired from the free-access garden outside. Inside, however, I felt the sculptures and art could have been arranged more efficiently. The building has three floors, with the upper floor offering insights into Einar Jonsson's life.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 19, 2024

There is also a sculpture garden. Well worth a visit, it is located very close to Hallgrimskirkja church but I suspect often overlooked because the facade facing the church is rather forbidding. I went soon after it opened on a cold and rainy day and had the place to myself; but due to the poor weather I didn't get to see the sculpture garden.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten July 30, 2024

I usually deprioritize sculpture museums but this one was so highly recommended by locals that I checked it out. So glad I did. Three floors, biggest (and for me, most impactful) work on the middle floor. Ask at the desk for a guide you can borrow. Whimsical, wild, fever-dreamy work. Artist's home is preserved on top floor. Ground floor has many of his smaller works (and a WC). Worth reading about the history of this artist who put Icelandic sculpture on the world art scene.

We stumbled upon this museum on our first visit to Iceland in 2006. The museum was closed but we wandered thru the sculpture garden and were stunned by the bronze sculptures. Revisiting it this time took us over 2 hours to see the entire exhibition where most of the bronze works replicated in stone or gypsum and his paintings and other sculptures are on display. Jonsson private apartment is located on the third floor.

This sculpture garden and museum is steps away from the landmark Hallgrimskirkja church. It's filled with interesting, thought provoking art. The garden is calm and secluded from the outside noise of tourists visiting the church. One of my favourite places in Reykjavik. This garden with sculptures and the nearby museum have something magical. Free entrance to the garden , so definitely don't miss it.

This was an excellent museum and I’m so glad we visited it before our self guided walking tour as there were many of his sculptures that we saw on our walk.
I thought that the sculptures were very interesting and well done. I also love Thorvaldsen who is one of his inspirations and you can see that in his sculptures. If you love art this is worth seeing.

The museum is located in a very convenient place next to the Hallgrimskirkja. The exhibition gives an insight into the life and work of one of the forefathers of Icelandic sculpture scene. The exhibits (both: indoors and in the garden) definitely have a more religious feeling than the church next to them, in some of them specific motives from Norse mythology can be traced.
The museum celebrates its 100 year anniversary this year. Sadly, currently, it looks quite outdated.

One of the 10 things I recommend to anyone who visits Reykjavik. If you are a fan of late 19th-century and early 20th-century art - this is an absolute gem. Einar was one of the originators in the Icelandic art world and this small and intimate place is both his original and a gift to the public. Parts of the museum are difficult for handicapped people and those who have difficulty with small spaces and steep steps. However, this is not an issue in the garden which has some of his best work on display.

Einar Jonsson was the first sculptor of Iceland and his beautiful works are exhibited in the house that was the sculptor's residence and today houses the museum. If for some reason you cannot enter the museum, in the garden there are several copies in bronze. It is located in front of Hallgrimskirkja. You pay to come in.

Is the scupture garden open all hours? Or what hours? I will be there in August 2020. Thx.
Written February 26, 2020
Pretty much, yes. Particularly in August when the daylight is so long. I don't remember there being any gates, at all, but it might close when the museum closes. Regardless, you'll find plenty of time to visit for free. Only the internal museum charges.

How much is the fee to access the garden? what is the opening times during summer?
Written July 2, 2015
The garden is free. June 1 - Sept 15 (2016 at least) open all day (10am to 5pm) except Mondays according to the sign at the entrance in April 2016.
