This church was completed in 1907. It was designed in the National Romantic style by a famous Finnish architect Lars Sonck.
The interior is famous for its stunning frescoes painted by Hugo Simberg. The striking altar-piece is painted by another famous Finnish painter Magnus Enckell.
This church is absolutely a must-see church in Finland.

The frescos of great Finnish symbolist Hugo Simberg depict all aspects of human life as befits a church. Young boys holding the flower garland surround the seating area and can be seen during the seremony from all angles. Death in many roles was a favourite theme for the artist, on the left side of the altar skeletons are tending to their garden. Several versions of the painting Wounded Angel exist, one in Ateneum in Helsinki, here two boys are carrying her with the citys factories in the back ground. The imposing stone cathedral in Art Nouveau style, mainly vanished from Tampere, was designed in 1902 by Lars Sonck.

The church is massive and the first impression is a bit like you're facing a castle of some sort. Inside is quite simple nad modern. Some wall painings and some windows, but nothing "flashy". Still, it is an interesting visit.

This beautiful church was designed by famous Finnish architect Lars Sonck and built early 20th century.
I highly recommend a visit and admiring all simple and beautiful detailed decorations. To get all out of the visit, I recommend to read about the church before hand.

The stone church looks imposing and grand. The horticulture and the trees around it add to the charm. It's a pity we couldn't go inside as there was a personal ceremony going on and we didn't feel like intruding.

Cathedral is famous for its frescoes, painted by the symbolist Hugo Simberg between 1905 and 1906.The paintings aroused considerable adverse criticism in their time, featuring versions of Simberg's The Wounded Angel and The Garden of Death. Of particular controversy was Simberg's painting of a winged serpent on a red background in the highest point of the ceiling, which some contemporaries interpreted as a symbol of sin and corruption

This architecturally interesting stone church is perhaps most famous for the frescos within, like the Garden of Death tended by friendly looking skeletons -- and most famously the huge serpent on the ceiling with the apple of temptation; some feel it's bad enough to have it, and that it shouldn't occupy the highest point of the cathedral, and still campaign a century later for its removal. Google these, and also the Wounded Angel. A culturally significant place, one of battle during the Finnish civil war. I'm certainly no church-goer, but I think you should research this place so that you know what you are looking at when you go to see it, because it's worth it; unique artistry and historical significance.

One of the best-known features of the city, the Cathedral offers more to see than regular churches do. It's a masterpiece of architecture, from the national romanticism era, as well as a showcase of many different types or artwork such as wood carvings and its famous painted frescoes that in their time were much discussed. Now well over a hundred years old, this cathedral is worth to add to any trip for some culture. Where else would you spend your time in a church under a huge snake?

We saw it in the evening. It’s a wonderful Christmas illumination and fine Scandic architecture in the heart of Tampere.

As far as I can remember it was 10.00 to 17.00 but ceremonies or services could mean that this is adapted. We went there in the early afternoon at around 13.00.
