This is a gem of modern architecture at its best. It is by one of Finland's leading architectural couples. In a land where modern architecture thrives, this is one of the best examples.

The building seen from above resembles a big male capercaillie in his pride so the library is known in Finnish as Metso. Architect couple Raili and Reima Pietiläs' design from 1986 has assymetrical lines and unexpected nooks both inside and out. The fame of Metso earned them the priviledge to create in 1993 Mäntyniemi in Helsinki, the formal residence of our president.

The Tampere Central Library is a fantastic place and at the same time it is ART.
The Library was opened in 1986 and is 6770 square meters big and did cost 13 mill Euro to build.
It is a litle bit hidden be hind trees and there as some sculptures out side the front entre. The building is a cirkel and there are no corners. The building material is concrete, granit and copper. Do go inside, the colours are white, blue and green like Finland.
It was fantastic to just walk around inside as tourist, what a place.

This big library contains something for everybody! You should go there and see the building and also listen to some music and borrow a book.

The library is located by the Hämeenpuisto park, next to the Alexander Church. The building was opened to the public in 1986.

The building's futuristic look imitates the bird capercaillie (metso in Finnish). The building has been designed by the architects Reima and Raili Pietilä.

Loads of comics for the kids and a cafe upstairs. Not too long walk from the main square, and many busses also pass by the main library.

The library is designed by Pietilä's, a well known architecture couple. The building is called Metso - capercaillie - a handsome bird found in the Finnish forests. The layout is very open. There is also a newspaper/magazine reading hall and cafe. Worthwhile to visit.

The architecture is very interesting and pleasing. Lots of round corners and shapes. Plenty of red bricks has been used as the building material. Good job by the architects (Pietilä) and by the city of Tampere for the courage to implement the architect's vision.

On the other hand, the functionality of the library is poor. It is not welcoming and it is quite hard to find the books you are looking for among the numerous shelves that all look the same.
