This is a wonderful art museum to immerse yourself in for an hour or two. It is an easy walk from downtown

Tampere Art Museum is Finland’s third oldest art museum.
The 2022 Summer Exhibition presents the works of two Young Artists of the Year: Emma Jääskeläinen and Kristian Krokfors.
There were not very many works. So the museum was quite quickly toured.
Luckily, we have Finnish Museum cards and didn't have to pay the entrance fee of 12 euros.

The small museum building near the Metso library is filled with mostly unknown works of local artist Joseph Alanen. He used tempera painting technique with light, shady colours to create mythical pictures of our national epic Kalevala. The chosen style resembles comic book characters with strongly painted outlines and extreme positions. The impressive Lemminkäinen and the Great Serpent was finished in 1920 just before his early death at the age of 34 in the current world epidemic Spanish fever.

The museum building is an old granary designed by a famous architect Carl Ludvig Engel in 1838. It was opened as a museum to the public in 1931.
On our visit, there were the MangaMania! exhibition on the ground floor and the Osamu Tezuka – The God of Manga exhibition on other floors.
So there was plenty of Manga to be seen. Manga is Japanese cartooning, comics, and animation.
For Manga fans, it would have been heaven. For us, the most interesting work was the rubber duck outside the museum building.
Luckily, we had a free entrance with the Finnish Museum Card.

Nice exhibitions from two persons (Holmström) and young artist (Rönkkö) of the year 2019. If you are familiar with their art or like to know more about them, this is a good place to visit.

When I was there, downstairs had a really rather boring exhibition drawn from the city’s collection, but upstairs there was a gem – an installation based on the 1918 uprising in Tampere, with old photos superimposed on the same places today. So good that I bought the catalogue even though it was in Finnish and Russian!

Two exhibitions. With all my love is composed by the young artist of the year. It did not appeal to either of us a bit. Memory of place was more interesting. Totally the exhibitions was a disappointment.

The drawings of Tove Jansson made me feel proud over Tove and the great Fenno-Swedish geniuses like Helene Schjerfbeck, Jean Sibelius, Hugo Simberg, Tove Jansson and Alvar Aalto. Taking pictures was sadly strictly forbidden in this museum, no doubt following orders from Moomin Characters Inc in Helsinki.

Even if you know nothing about Tove Jansson and the Moomins you will enjoy this. Of course all children will be jumping up and down but it’s also suitable for adults. Yoy are not allowed to take pictures but you really don’t mind. Too busy looking at all the details.. Go there!
