About
Amalienborg offers two royal experiences that let you get close to royal history through the last 250 years. In Christian VIII’s Palace the museum offers an insight into royal life past and present. You can see the private chambers of former kings and queens and, on most days, there is also admittance to the royal reception rooms (check periods at our website) from the museum. In Christian VII’s Palace you can walk in the footsteps of the royal guests, and be shown round the magnificent rooms where grand festivities are held. You can book a guided tour of Christian VII’s Palace in the ticket office of Christian VIII’s Palace or on our website. Remember that every day at noon you can watch the changing of the The Royal Danish Life Guards.

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Indre By (Inner City)
This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

    Museum ok. Parade good.
I had an ok visit. There are free lockers to use for belongings as you can't take bags into the museum itself. It was quite hard to actually find the entrance as it is covered in scaffolding at the moment, but once I found it you can exchange your combined Rosenborg ticket at the ticket desk for an entry ticket. I don't think the combined ticket was actually worth it and I'd suggest only going to Rosenborg and giving this one a miss. The areas you can see are small. Only over 2 floors and the top floor was quite empty when I visited. If you are there between 12-1 you can see the guards display which was good. It was worth a visit and a wander around the outside but I wouldn't call it essential to pay for the entry.

    Need upgrade
Amalien borgmuseet museum need more interesting things because it is almost empty building. Right now what they have is you can see almost exactly same in some old peoples home. Nothing special and you have to pay entrance fee for nothing. Needed upgrade….

Lots of history, info and personal artifacts on the Danish Royal family
You only get to see an unoccupied part of the current Palace, which is not that extensive but still worth a visit. Provides good information and background on the Royal family throughout the years. A number of rooms are presented as each of the Kings would have left them during their time period, which was interesting. There are also lots of phptos and pwrsonal possessions on display. Time your visit to see the changing if the guard at noon if possible.

The current residence of the Danish monarchy
The palace is currently used as a home of the Danish monarchy. However, a section of it is open to the public, with the studies and libraries of the Danish royal family open to display. It is well worth a visit, but best paired with a ticket combo to Rosenborg or other attractions in Denmark, as only two floors are available to see in Amalienborg.

Just watching the changing of the guards
Nothing much to see but just came to appreciate the typical changing of the guards. Photo ops may be limited , but it is what it is. To make matters worse , it was raining . Anyway the activity doesn’t require payment.

Interesting view of every day life of the royals
I liked that the museum shows the life of the royalty in the present. It's in one of the four buildings in the complex and is the only one you can go into, as other three buildings are the queen's home, the prince and his family's home, and then a "hotel" for visiting heads of state or famous people. The museum had all the rooms from when one of the last kings died and it was very interesting to see how even though it was a palace, the rooms were cozy and felt very homey, even though they had tremendous style. It was very different than anything else we've seen. Make sure to check the website before going for the hours, as the schedule is not consistent through the year. Plus, you can buy a combination ticket for this palace and the Rosenborg Castle.

Palace in the heart of the city and gorgeous circular courtyard
This is basically a self-toured palace visit. We found out after speaking with one of the staff that certain seasons a guided tour option is offered which I think would be more informative and of value. We just walked through the rooms and read the plaques and then headed outside for watching the changing of the guard ceremony. Luckily the day we went it was not too hot outside because there is no air conditioning and I imagine that the palace would get quite warm indoors and especially with huge crowds walking through. Like other palaces, you have to check your backpacks and purses (if they're not too small) into a locker room near the souvenir gift shop area.

Fascinating insight into the lives of the Danish Monarchy
TIP: Book online so you're not disappointed. If you have the Copenhagen Card simply select this option and you will not be charged. The tour provides access to one of the four near symmetrical palace buildings which surround the square (really a 'round'!). It is called a museum as many of the rooms are set up to show how they would have looked like during a particular monarch's reign. It was fascinating to see the office of Frederik IX and his immense pipe collection scattered throughout (this is one of the few 'original' rooms in the palace). The tour is a relatively short one and self guided. There are guides if you'd like.

    Quick & fun history
Very cute museum, easy to do in 30 min or less. If you have kids they won’t get bored so that’s a plus! The Amelioborg Castle is only partially open to visitors so if you want to see an entire castle and spend hours you are better off going to Rosenberg Castle. Overall I was happy with the visit and learned quite a bit about Danish royalty and history!

    Good setup
A beautiful layout. I think its really quite ingenious. Four houses set up like a square. Wonderful. It's easy to explore and quite nice to be in. Not too crowded or noisy which is unlike other palaces in the world. Enjoyed my time there. Didn't get to do the tour but being there was good enough.

We visited using our Copenhagen Card. Again, with it not being the busiest day, we couldn't tell where the entrance was. However, it wasn't as disappointing as some previous reviews suggested. If you love history, you'll love the museum. It does give you great detail about prominent figures of the Danish royal family and their British & Russian relatives. There were two excellent staff members there that gave us so much information about the 4 buildings, Queen Margarethe and the now King & Queen. Thanks to them, we were reminded to catch the changing of the guards outside which was a great experience.

This is a small museum off the square. Really not sure it’s worth the cost of entry. The saving grace was we saw the changing of the guard from the 2nd floor of the museum instead of standing outside in the cold!

The rooms and artefacts were interesting, but I wouldn’t call this a “must see” attraction. Entry was included with the Copenhagen Card.

I was expecting to see much more of the palace than we saw, the rooms are plain/dull and in no way grand. There are several rooms but overall the visit will take not much more than 30 mins.
I would only recommend if passing or if you have the Copenhagen card.

I was a little underwhelmed overall. What you can see is nice but there isn't that much to see. It did not take me long. I would say to go if you have the time but not essential.

It is located not far away from the metro station. Its collection is bountiful. Portraits of historical monarchs are fabulous. The ambience is opulent.

Royal palace in Copenhagen, made of four identical palaces.
The square and surroundings are very nice, but if you have limited time or budget, Rosenborg and Christiansborg are better and richer choices.
