About
The beautiful 400-year-old castle is situated in central Copenhagen's popular park, The King's Garden. The castle was built by one of the most famous Scandinavian kings, Christian IV. Today, the glory of the past can be experienced through the numerous art treasures of the previous kings and queens. Among the main attractions is the Great Hall with the coronation thrones and three life-size silver lions standing guard. The crown jewels and royal regalia sparkle behind the thick walls of the treasury beneath the castle.

Neighborhood: Indre By (Inner City)
This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

- ali_sLondon, United Kingdom11 contributionsGreat Visit(I got the combined ticket with Amalienborg). The ticket counter was easy and the staff were helpful. There are free lockers for backpacks and belongings as you can't take these into the castle. The booklet was good and told you some information about each room in a logical order than you can follow. There is only 1 staircase but this wasn't a problem as the castle wasn't very busy anyway at this time of year. You can also go in the armoury and treasury which are the basement levels, these were really worth a visit and not as many people had gone down to these. Quite a lot of steps up and down throughout but overall a great visit to Rosenborg. The gardens are also nice. You get some good views of the castle. I'm not sure that the combined ticket was worth it for Amalienborg itself but Rosenborg is definitely worth visiting on a trip to Copenhagen.Visited March 2023Traveled soloWritten March 24, 2023
- mattt37943 contributionsA lovely castle with stunning groundsIt was a really lovely trip to see the castle, however it was quite small and the visiting the castle itself shouldn't take longer than 45 minutes. The cost of entrance is a bit pricey but in line with what you pay elsewhere in Copenhagen. It's definitely worth it with the Copenhagen card but otherwise it might be something you are happy to look at from the exterior rather than pay to go insideVisited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 12, 2023
- Chris10 contributionsThe crown jewels are hereThe surroundings are really nice on a sunny day and the castle is a good visit. We didn't find it as good as Fredericksberg Slot but saying that we wouldn't have chosen not to see it. There is a lot to see here and there are some really interesting rooms. You can really get a feel for the history of the monarchy. The crown jewels are worth the visit though as they are very well presented.Visited April 2023Written April 12, 2023
- Marry cBrooklyn, New York27 contributionsInterestingI visited Rosenberg castle a week ago and it is very nice inside and outside but it is not very big. Specially basement was very interesting and lot of things to see. From the ticket office they are trying to sell you other museum tickets. In my opinion better don’t buy other one because it is not interesting at all. It is waste of time and money but I fully recommend this castle.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 9, 2023
- Ryan KDe Pere, Wisconsin166 contributionsWell worth the visitGreat castle. Be sure to reserve your time in advance. We walked here after the changing of the guard and had to wait about 20-30 minutes until our reserved time to enter. However, if walking up the reservation time was a couple of hours out. I wasn't sure how long we would be at the changing of the guard or the exact time we would be there so the timing was actually pretty good. Bags had to go into the free lockers. Very nice castle and lots of interesting things to see.Visited April 2023Written May 31, 2023
- David WingettLondon, United Kingdom63 contributionsLovely palace visitCertainly the best of the three palaces in Copenhagen. Plus they also allow photography (including flash) of the Crown Jewels. Rooms are very nice, timed entry, so there is no crush. Gift shop is very good, and staff are very friendly.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten June 2, 2023
- Graham FGuilsborough, United Kingdom37 contributionsFowlers on TourUsed the Copenhagen Card to gain timed entry but not long to wait. Gardens to the castle are free. A beautiful building, extensive display of art and sculptures and, of course, the Crown Jewels.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 12, 2023
- David BToronto, Canada361 contributionsSpectacular !The castle is interesting but the antiques and artifacts were exquisite. I don’t believe I have seen such a concentration of several centuries of Europe’s finest crafts, it just went on and on. Make sure not to miss the armoury and treasury down below. I think the only drawback was that the entire museum was just overwhelming, several rooms were worthy of an entire tour on their own.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten July 2, 2023
- ChaiTeaMaumelle, Arkansas36 contributionsMissed the Crown Jewels in the Basement!Highly advise getting tickets online for a particular time slot due to long lines at the ticket office. We enjoyed our self guided tour but somehow missed the basement with the Crown Jewels! I didn’t read about them until after we left - my fault. The castle is filled to the brim with the finest furnishings and art. Well worth a visit!Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 3, 2023
- JimRiestererEdina, Minnesota4,726 contributionsA top tourist siteOne of the top attractions in Denmark, this former “summer” palace of the Danish Royalty features art artifacts and the Crown Jewels. Be sure to make a reservation in advance as this place gets really busy and timed tickets are required. You enter on the ground floor and proceed through a series of rooms including the King’s bedroom and formal receiving rooms. Every surface is adorned with art and period artifacts. Proceed up to the 1st floor and continue your self-guided visit and be sure to poke into the small alcove to take in the mirror room, an homage to the grandness of Versailles in France. The throne room and life-sized silver lions are another high point. Proceed to the 2nd floor then back down the spiral staircase and outside and around to the right to visit the castle treasury. Here you will see the Danish crowns as well as the imperial jewels-definitely a highlight. Even with timed tickets this place is swarming with tourists so come with an attitude of patience. Probably best appreciated with a guide as the map and written information covers just the basics.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 6, 2023

I visited this castle with my family.
I will not describe it in great detail because there are enough reviews in this regard.
But what could be done much better, would be a better organization.
We had a paid tour with a guide, a lady who spoke too slowly and couldn't hear herself very well.
There are no separate circuits between those entering and those leaving, for this reason there was a big agglomeration and you couldn't understand anything.
That is, those who were going out were constantly crossing each other, literally passing among those in the group with a guide.
Otherwise, the castle is worth visiting, it is of course a piece of history, and the garden is spectacular and well maintained.

The castle is very beautiful and well preserved. You get a sense of how life actually was lived here. I enjoyed the to floor ballroom very much. The garden looks lovely but I will have to return in the summer time to see it in bloom.

Beautiful gardens and surroundings. The trees are kept immaculately and all shapes square at the ends. Worth a visit and the Crown Jewels are a must see in the basement

Make sure you look around the gardens behind the castle. There are many incredible statues in the garden, including my now favourite statue of all time - Kamp Med en Slange (A Moment in Peril in English)
This statue features a Native American battling with a python, and the attention to detail with the python is breathtaking. I don’t think I have ever got so excited by a statue.

It was New Year's Day and we were able to walk around the grounds to see the garden in winter's state. There were more people around than we thought which was nice. Unfortunately we didn't purchase tickets prior to our walk so we were unable to go inside. The grounds surrounding the castle are lovely though and it was nice to enjoy the cold outdoors.

No it doesn't but its basically in the city so there are lots close by. Nearest one is probably in the grounds across the road. However, suggest you check out the fantastic food court and market in Norreport which around 10 mins walk away.

Do the gardens close at 3pm like the castle or do they remain open?
Kongernes Samling

Dear Sam3400, it is only a part of the The King's Garden - the castle ground within the moat - which follows the opening hours of the castle and closes early in the Winter; the rest is open until later. Best wishes, Jeanne, Rosenborg Castle

Dear Seaside26,
Thank you for your questions and interest.
With a Copenhagen Card you would have to visit the ticket office before entering the castle to get a (free) ticket issued.
As for bags, for security reasons, bags larger than 15 x 23 x 15 centimeters must be placed in lockers before entering the castle.
Best wishes,
