My wife and I were on a Regent cruise in the Baltic Sea, and one of the ports of call was Ronne. Ironically, we did not see much of the town, with the itinerary involving a visit to a round church, a quick walk-around in beautiful Gudhjem, a herring lunch at a smokehouse, and a final stop at Hammershus. We were told by our otherwise rather useless guide that this was the oldest castle ruin in northern Europe, otherwise we were just dropped off near the cafe/gift shop and told to return in 45 minutes.
The castle is at the top of a significant hill, but the gravel and reasonably graded path took about 15 minutes to ascend. Some interesting flowers noted along the path sides.
As a big aficionado of castle and palaces, I could not resist the walk, and it was, indeed, worthwhile. There are many walls still standing, and the height of the hill provided good evidence as to why this site had been chosen for this edifice. It was interesting to see the aspects of the structure which were on the back side of the view one gets looking up from the parking lot at the base.
Pardon my ignorance, but prior to the trip, we had no idea as to where Bornholm was located, but the visit to the island, and the stop at Hammershus, definitely enhanced our appreciation for the centuries of history which characterize the area.

Amazing place to visit. Fantastic views and the sense of history flows all over. The cafe building has been constructed with delicacy so it fits perfectly into the landscape. And it is free (besides the 30 DKK for parking).

This ancient castle ruin is simply a must do while you are on the wonderful island of Bornholm. The historical importance of this place is incredible. We had a guided tour and I would recommend having a knowledgable guide if possible, as there is a lot of history here that is not obvious from simply touring the grounds. Be prepared for an hour or so of walking, some up a gradual incline. They offer an amazing visitors center and gift shop, as well as a nice restaurant if you need a snack along the way.

Wow, what an amazing place to visit in a stunning location and it's free and open 24hrs.
So we arrived one hour before the tourist centre opened (10am to 5pm) and had to take the longer walk from the car park rather than via the information centre. The castle is accessible 24/7. This turned out to be a good thing, as we had the place to ourselves for the first hour and took some great photos and the atmosphere was eerie and windswept. The path up is steep and uneven, not suitable for strollers, wheelchairs or people with mobility issues.
The views are superb in all directions, there is signage in Danish, English and German.
Fascinating history and stunningly well preserved/restored.
The visitor centre was open on our way back with toilets, a cafe, souvenir shop and beautifully presented history of the castle.
The views from the top terrace of the visitor centre are spectacular.
All of it was free.
Apparently, you have to pay for parking which goes towards preservation of the historical site.
We visited pre season and there was no one in sight pay.
Must do on Bornholm. Well worth it.

It is a must be if you on Bornholm. It is old medieval castle - one of the greatest of all in northern Europe. Even today it is make an impresion - so we can only imagine how it looks in the past.

Place is for free - You can walk inside the ruins, see the walls (3 rows!) and "main castle" inside. Near is small but very interesting museum (also for free) which shows history of the castle (it take about 10-15 min to read it all), and multimedia - on which you can see how it looks like in the past and identify how it was plan (it show where was bakery, armory etc.)
Also cafe with great view to the castle.

Definitly worth to see

Especially outside the tourist season, it is a really nice place to be.
Personally, I would like more to be done against the ill-mannered kids who do not follow the rules, for example, the parents.
The new visitor center is well made and definitely worth a visit in itself.

We visited Bornholm in September - a great act of faith coming all the way from the UK with the risk we'd have to quarantine on our return. During 10 days on Denmark we only encountered Danish and German tourists. It's our 4th time in the country and we return for the exceptionally friendly welcome we've found on previous visits. Driving to the ruins in a large hire car on the wrong side of the road along tiny lanes was a scary experience so we were pleased to notice the large blue P signs of a car park with a footpath leading up to the castle. The parking appeared to be free pretty much as we've encountered in most other places. The visit itself is interesting enough with great views but we were devastated to have been served with a ticket when we came to leave, having not realised it was for the disabled and for coaches. Clearly we didn't know there was a second car park further along the road. We phoned three times to contest the ticket although it would be blindingly obvious we wouldn't have knowingly parked in the wrong place. Having to phone back and being kept hanging on probably cost us at least £20 sterling and the ticket itself about £65. The German operators of the car park said we had to pay the ticket. On my return to the UK I sent a full explanatory email to the castle but they were unmoved and refused to offer us a refund. On the second last day of our holiday this 'tourist tax' left a really unpleasant taste in our mouth. Hitherto we've only encountered friendliness and helpful people on our holidays to Denmark but perhaps that is changing? Easy money to make from foreign tourists who were brave enough to travel when no-one else would.

We were so lucky coincidentally (on a Tuesday) to find that a narrator (called Louise) from the “Bornholms Middelaldercenter” had a guided history tour at the Hammershus! Louise was a really great narrator and with her stories she captured us all – even the small kids – and the history with kings, queens and bishops were made interesting and present. Thanks, Louise! I can only highly recommend this tour when visiting the Hammershus!
