The best-preserved Byzantine heritage in the world.
Excellent district for exploring on foot. We spent 2 days climbing the streets searching for 16 churches-wall-monasteries. It is a truly cultural experience.
We ended at the Byzantine museum. A gem with a fantastic restaurant.

If you enjoy culture and history in Greece then you must see the Byzantine buildings. I love the Byzantine era in Greece and these buildings reflect that time. It’s all part of the cultural experience of a city. We highly recommend it.

Thessaloniki is full of ancient monuments. It is a good town to do a walking tour. We walked all round Thessaloniki from the port, where we arrived on a cruise ship. I got a map and list of historic buildings from the internet (there are several good tourism websites for Thessaloniki) before leaving home and we spent about 5 hours walking the city armed with a camera. Really enjoyed it. There are lots of cute Byzantine churches and Roman ruins. Check out the Rotunda, the remains of the city walls, and some of the churches. There are views over the city from the Vlatadon Monastery.

There are many remains of Roman and Early Byzantine times in the city. The most interesting are the Rotunda and Arch of Galerius, as well as the Hagia Sophia.

I was glad to see some remains of Ancient times here- the Arch of Galerius, the Rotunda, and the Minaret. Located closer to the White Tower, I also noticed what appeared to be the remains of some walls.

Hope these ancient ruins would be restored for everyone to admire!

A lot of things to see, to take photos and to admire. People hanging around, discussing, singing.
A hippie, multicultural square.

There are various impressive ruins from the Roman and Byzantine eras to be found located throughout Thessaloniki. Of particular relevance are the ancient churches, the Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius. Worthwhile to mark the monuments of interest on Google maps and then spend the day just wandering around from site to site admiring them.
