Originally intended by the emperor Galerius as a mausoleum, it was later converted to a church and then to a mosque. Today it is a museum with remnants of the glorious mosaics that once covered the interior.

The church Rotonda (Ροτόντα) bears its name to the round shape. It was built by Galerius in the 4th century, and it is the oldest church in Greece. It also has a tower from the times when it was used as a mosque. Diameter 24.5 m, wall thickness over 6 m. It is worth visiting, and it is located nearby other tourist attractions.

Despite not being furnished, we loved this historic building. Architecturally, it was stunning and when it would have been fully covered in the mosaics, it would have glowed in the sun.

For the 6 euro entrance was expecting more. The inside is empty with one info plaque explaining a bit abut the place, you will spend about 15 min tops.

From the outside it almost seems like an old storage building, and it doesn't get much better when you go inside, as it looks deserted and empty. However, look up and you'd see some well-preserved mosaics, both geometric patterns and scenes.

The place is under construction. The visit experience is poor. There is not much to see inside, the signs are very minimal no audioguide or app.

The recent exhibition about Greek refugees is very emotional. That is a sad history which could be thought-provoking for people of Europe...

Ancient site of worship but in a similar style of the Pantheon in Rome. This building has been many different sites of worship of the centuries. The minaret harks back to the time when it was a Muslim mosque. Best to buy a combined ticket to see the White Tower, Museum of the Byzantine Empire and the Archaeological Museum.

The rotunda, built along with the Galerian Complex is a gem of late roman architecture. Imagine walking into a large dome and thats what you have. The walls and dome are beautifully decorated in late Roman-Byzantine motifs and artwork.

Entrance is 4 euros

Currently in 2022 there is a very emotional and moving exhibition on what the Greeks refer to as the 'Asia Minor Disaster' where between 1913 and 1922 somewhere between 300,000 and 1 million pontic greeks were slaughtered by Ottoman Turkey. In 1917 the Great Fire of Thessaloniki destroyed two thirds of the city and left the population homeless. The city at the time saw an influx of refugees from war-torn Balkans and Pontic Greeks escaping the Turks. Many of the Romano-Byzantine Churches in the city (including the Rotunda) which had either been gutted by the fire or miraculously escaped housed not only the destitute population of the city but also the 1.5 million refugees that arrived between 1919 and 1922
