- KathieThe Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield, United Kingdom86 contributionsDay tripWe hired a car to visit Acheron River. We thoroughly enjoyed walking in the river and swimming the short bit when we had to. Definitely need beach shoes, we sadly could not take our phones as we didn't have a waterproof bag. It was breathtaking! Unfortunately the earlier experience on the rafting was not so good. We paid 25 euro each for 35mins. We were put on a raft with about 9 other people who were extremely loud. Don't get me wrong ,we are fun people ,but these people did spoil our experience as we felt deafened. Sadly we didn't time the trip bit we are sure it was short of 35 mins Although it was fun, we felt ripped off and disappointed. Afterwards we drove to Souli water mill which was quaint and idyllic. The river ran througj it, with small springs. The lunch was AMAZING, delicious Greek salad, fresh bread and Chips, beer, along with complimentary dips.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 28, 2024
- JobeninaHarlington, United Kingdom353 contributionsBeautiful placeHad a great trip to the Acheron River. Booked with Kanaris on the harbour front who we have gone with on previous trips. We double checked with the booking clerk where to get the pick up from and they confirmed it would be at our hotel but it was actually down the road from our hotel on the sea front and the tour guide, Mark, was really off with us for being in the wrong place. Not a great start to the trip at all. But it did get better from then on. We had a stop at the Necromantion and then a coffee stop before heading onto the Acheron River. Once there, there is a storage room that you can use to get changed and you can leave belongings there but the room is not locked and there are no other facilities available to keep belongings safe and secure so you need to think carefully about what to take with you on this trip. You start by walking up a path through the valley to the river, which is very picturesque. You need swim shoes or something similar for walking up the river and the water is very cold. You can walk for quite a distance in ankle to knee deep water before you reach the point where you need to swim, so for those who don't wish to swim you can still get a good feel for the place and see some beautiful scenery. After a couple of hours there we then had lunch in the cafe next to the river. Food and setting was lovely.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 23, 2024
- superkrageSkanderborg, Denmark251 contributionsHot/cold-experienceGREAT experience!! Walking in the cold cold water of the gorge (5-10 Celsius) with the warm sun above us - can’t explain the feeling. Important to wear swimsuits and keep phone etc in 100% waterproof bags as you need to swim at times. Would go back any time!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 2, 2024
- Adella RPristina, Kosovo60 contributionsAn unforgettable experienceExcellent experience! We walked in the river all the way up to the springs. The water was very cold, but since it was hot outside, it seemed ok to us. You have to wear swimming shoes because there are rocks where you have to climb and in some parts even swim. You can take your belongings in the waterproof bag and walk up to the bridge. It was a great experience for us, but on the way back we were really tired and our feet hurt.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 15, 2024
- Joe750Brighton, United Kingdom8 contributionsGreat natural spot but don’t expect serenityStunning natural gorge/canyon setting. Fun to wade upstream - the gorge walls have been carved into beautiful contours by the water. Like lots of “sights” in Greece / Turkey, it is very much an over crowded spot with lots of groups on organised tours. If you want a more tranquil experience, go to one of the many similar places in France. However, the beauty of the place transcends the August crowds and, as always at these places, the people-watching then becomes part of the experience anyway - trying to guess what country people are from etc. A fun few hours!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 16, 2024
- susiebee6922 contributionsAn absolute must if in the areaThis is hands down one of the most beautiful places I have been... Be prepared to swim in parts (if you are shorter than at least 6 foot) . Wear swimwear and ideally take a waterproof for phones etc. The photos will be spectacular! Water is very cold so takes a bit of time to get acclimatised. Aqua shoes are an absolute must but they sell them on site if you forget them and also the waterproof bags. Enjoy!!Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 11, 2024
- GrandadSouthEastMaidstone, United Kingdom296 contributionsWell Worth the TimeVisited this on one of the few dry days we had on our recent trip to Parma. It is a fascinating experience and one that we all enjoyed. Most reviews talked about walking in the river but that really isn’t necessary. We asked along the pathway alongside the river and it was fine. Fab views and well worth the time spent here.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2024

On a hot summerday this is a wonderful activity. Just drive up to the starting point and start walking through the river wearing only bading suit and watershoes. At the start the water is very cold, however going further this gets less extreme. At some points the water is deeper but most of the time there is a possibility to go on without actually having to swim. If you reach the bridge, it is possible to climb onto it and make an extra walk further up over land. This is a really nice activity to do for everyone !

I fell in love with this place! Definitely worth a visit if you like nature attractions. We first drove the car to the side of the road too early and walked to the river, but the current was really strong, so we jumped back in the car and drove towards the front, where we found a guided free parking lot, where you could find activities (for a fee, of course) and a restaurant. We walked forward and found a small path that ran next to the river and from the end of the path we started walking along the river. The river was beautiful bluish and milky, cold of course, but you got used to it. The depth varied, but most of the time the water was below the knees. The shoes are absolutely must! There were quite a lot of people, even though we left relatively early, so I recommend coming early.

Rafting down Acheron river wasn't so exciting as expected. However if you wish to do so DO NOT chose the first group down the kiosk. Except if you wish to live along with Vivi the experience of paddling a slave ship. The ride was expected to be 30 mins approximately and we did it in 10. At least we took a break when she was on the phone and "chatted" with other boat guides

This is an easy walk up the Acheron River, suitable for the whole family. The nice thing is that, while you can finally walk for a couple of kilometres, you can decide when to turn around depending on ages of the family or abilities of the walkers.
There is shallow wading from the beginning, and it does get progressively a bit more complicated, with some areas becoming chest-deep and some areas requiring a short swim to keep going. You then get to some huge rocks to be navigated, and for the few that make it all the way past the bridge there is a big lake.
Along the way, even from right at the beginning, very cold fresh water springs can be found on the sides of the canyon in a couple of places; these are perfect for drinking direct from the mountain.
It can get a bit cold in the water, and being in a canyon there is limited sunlight, so keep an eye on the kids for when they start to turn blue...:)
The depth of the water will naturally vary with the seasons, so be aware that at some times it will be an easier walk that at others. But it is still worth doing even if you don't get as far upstream as you would like.
Very important: wear decent water shoes!!! You cannot do this walk barefoot, and flip-flops or sandals are also a bad idea.

Stunningly beautiful BUT get there early! We arrived at 9.30 and could walk up the river and see very few others. We made it to the bridge but on the way back, it was like the M25 on a Monday morning!
The water is freezing but stick with it as it is so worth while and you soon get used to it. To reach the bridge does require you swimming in a narrow gorge that has quite a current against you - not for the young or weak swimmers but even if you make it this far and turn back, it is worth it.
Another reason to get there early...parking! The parking area is vast and when we arrive there were no more than 100 cars there. By the time we returned, it was utter carnage. Once you have finished the walk, we recommend avoiding the fast food options and jumping in your car and going the short way down the river where there are a few riverside restaurants where your enjoyment of the river can extend a little longer

Having visited Parga in June we read about this place but didn't have time to visit. Returning in September it was a priority, and as we didn't have a car we booked through a local travel agent, €20 each. ( Apollonian travel ?? ) I am so glad we did, I would say it was one of my best days ! The springs are gorgeous.. wear swimwear or anything you don't mind getting wet.. we took a waterproof bag ( as recommended on here ) and put our bits in there .. and wet shoes are a must ! The spring is really cold at first but you get used to it.. deep at times and you have to swim..it was lovely. Thoroughly recommended. The rafting was good ..only €5-7 per person. I did the zip wire, too, which was fun ( €15)
Excellent day our!

Magnificent, water flows from the mountains down into the valley. clear and cold water. just barely able to wade in the water. We were alone without rush.
Water was high and therefore unable to wade to the cafe on the other side of river.
I recommend swimming shoes when you wade in the river.

What can we say about this river? From the springs to the estuary it is full of beauty! First about the springs, YES, the waters are indeed very cold but it is an unforgettable experience! YES you need shoes and your bare minimum belongings in a waterproof bag. No clothes, no bags - not even a towel because you will pass a point where the water will be up to your neck. Swim - you'll miss out if you don't. Even I, being The Cryouliara, enjoyed it! It has a bunch of activities at the springs - personally I'm not a very sporty type but if you are it has rafting and zip line and horses. It has shops with souvenirs but also equipment (shoes, waterproof cases for keys and mobile phone), there is also where you can eat and rest. It even has hawkers selling jewelry and clothes - adding an artistic aura to your pass.
But you should also go to the estuary - to Ammoudia beach - and take the boat owned by the two Christos who take you for a ride in the river (8€ for an adult) and tell you the legend mixed with a lot of humor but you also see the fauna of the river (beavers, cormorants, turtles, etc.). It was a great experience! Don't miss it!

A great day out. We got there around 9.30am to beat the crowds and we had the river to ourselves. Water was freezing cold when you first go in but you soon got used to it. Jelly shoes are a must!!
Walked up the river as far as we could- needed to swim in a couple of places, but the water was so fresh and clear, it was a wonderful experience. Highly recommend as a morning out. Had a coffee along the river at one of the many tavernas afterwards.

Salve, come faccio a contattare gli organizzatori di questa navigazioen da Ammoudia lungo il fiume Acheronte ?

Hi. I'll be going with a drone which isn't waterproof. So I get I won't be able to walk the full river but roughly how far would I get until it will be too deep to carry on? Thanks!
Written January 7, 2022
It gets deep in areas and then shallower in others as the river widens and narrows, so it is a bit hit and miss. Where you board is quite deep so not sure if you would even be able to start

Dove posso trovare, durata e costi?
Grazie a tutti quelli che mi aiuteranno.

Ciao.

Just wondered what kayaking or rafting company is the best to take a ride down the river with our 6 year old son?
Written August 13, 2019
They are really pretty much all at the same price range and independents on you what kind of right you want to get there are bigger boats as you can say that fit more ppl that are a lil cheaper since you go as a group or individually if you are experienced. To be honest even if you are experienced I would recommend since your with a small child to go with the guide as a group cause the level of the water might be different if it was raining previously and something might Chance along the way this guys usually know the area the best. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Hi, I will spend some days in Ammoudia, and I'm interested to know where to start and how much do I have to walk. I will go with a 5 year old, so I need to know what to expect.
Written July 30, 2019
At Archeron Springs, from the main car park walk up the path on the left for 500m until the path ends. Then you can go another 10 mins or sowalking in the water, until you feel it isnt safe to continue with your 5 yr old. From there the water can get 6 foot depth in places, though flowing gently. This advice is for summer/july only.
