This site received only 1 Michelin star, but we were much more impressed. Situated at a hilltop with pretty views towards Agia Nikolaos and the sea, these remains from the 4th-3th century BC are by themselves imposing and pleasant to explore. Recommended!

A little off the beaten track but only five minutes drive from the tourist honeypot of Kritsa, this is a very evocative site. Not over interpreted or reconstructed like Knossos, the extensive remains are left to speak for themselves. Well guided compared with other Cretan...More

Once a very important settlement, and now in ruins, Lato still resonates with its glorious past. Sitting on the steps is the right place to sense it.

Quite a way out of town into the mountains, Lato is relatively modern compared to the Minoan sites, c500BC. It avoids all the errors of Knossos and is little more than a few piles of stones and some scant info boards. But it is fascinating...More

Lato is still in the process of being excavated - there is much, much more under the brushwood on the mountainside, but what has already been exposed is fascinating: a north and south acropolis, theatre seating 250 people, houses, workshops, temples and cisterns perched on...More

Our guide book describes Lato as a "minor archaeological site". Having visited several (including Gortys and Phaestos) we would say that it is the most interesting after Knossos. It also, as other reviewers have said, has fabulous views - better that Phaestos, and way better...More

This site is incredibly well preserved. We were the first to arrive in the morning and felt like we were walking in our own village. Not just a lot of old stones, but a truly understandable, visible little town.

We arrived at 830am and enjoyed the whole site to ourselves, before the heat and crowds. We just wandered through the site as a family absorbing the atmosphere.

I made the mistake of arriving here just before 2pm, with the gate being locked at 3pm had just an hour. Really enjoyed the site and should have given myself a bit more time. It is quite steep to get to the very top of...More

Not an easy site to get around, although easy to find from Kritsa. It really is very hilly, not for those with mobility issues. The location is quite breathtaking, and there are several interesting features around the site including a threshing floor, the prytaneion, and...More
