If you walk in the city of “Povoa de Varzim” in the historic center you surely have to made a short visito of the “Fortaleza da Póvoa de Varzim” or the “Fortaleza de nossa Senhora de Conceição”. This small fortress and old fortress is supposed to have been built in the 1400s, during the reign of João I of Portugal. Fairly small in terms of height, the fortress is now free to enter and it plays host to a handful of small restaurants. I didn't actually eat in any of them, so can't comment on the quality. Truth be told it's a relatively modest sized structure, unless you are sitting down to eat you'll probably be able to cover both insde and out comfortably in under half an hour. While I wouldn't describe the fortress as being worth making the journey from Porto to see in itself, if you are visiting Povoa de Varzim it's definitely worth a visit.…

We found this on a day trip to Povoa from Porto. Located at the southern end of the town on the seafront, this stone fortress has been developed to include a number of restaurants. No charge to enter and you get some interesting views across the sea and harbour. Don't make a special journey to reach the fortress, but it is certainly worth visiting if you are nearby.…
