To be honest, we took the decision to visit Guimarães only a day before, without any preparation. The idea was suggested to us by a friendly shop owner in Porto, who sketched a rectangular map of Portugal dotted with the cities he considered worth visiting....More

This is a wonderful castle to explore. Kids of all ages will have fun climbing along the walls and taking in the views of the surrounding area. Be sure to climb to the top of the turret and explore the kids room. Fun, fun.

How can you not love a castle that was built by a woman called Mumadona? It’s a small castle but very important historically and it was fun to walk around the walls. There was also a very cute video for children about Afonso Henriques the...More

We bought a deal two castles for €6 euros it’s a good stroll. Not a lot of history but beautiful views and construction and a stained glass in the chapel.

Grounds are well kept and the views are very good. It was built in the 10th century to defend the monastery from attacks by Moors and Norsemen.

A well kept medieval castle that is safe for kids to around. Our 8 year old could not keep himself in a single place. Definitely a place for kids to visit.

We visited the castle while in Guimaraes for the day. It is small compared to most castles in England, but there were good views and for only 2 euros you can’t really complain. The day we went was very noisy as lots of school children...More

The castle is amazing, with so much history. For my six-year-old it was also memorable because the stairs and supports are built in so you can climb up and explore the top turrets of the castle, and get the strategic view.
