Does ANY visitor to Madeira not visit Funchal's old town? If so, then (s)he misses a very colourful, atmospheric and, yes, blatantly touristy part of the island's capital!

We walked around the Area, which was Interesting to see all the Painted Windows and Doors. We got Coffee at as little Cafe . The Area was nice to See.

We loved this area, it felt like a step back in time, with cobbled streets and decorated houses. Well woth a visit.

The differently painted dors are really beautiful and zhis old patt of Funchal has a a lot of charme.

We found the narrow streets very clean and picturesque. We wandered around exploring then stopping for a cake and coffee. Several areas are pedestrianised.

Nicely intact old town part and in english also on the heritage plaques . 10 years ago there was also some decay on buildings , now even more if you know where to look.

The little alleys with the painted doors are very beautiful and give the quarter a unique character. Especially when cruise ships are in Funchal it is very crowded. If you want to enjoy the beatifully painted doors visit the Zona Velha on a holdiay when...More

It was a pleasant stroll through this area of the old town. The prime attraction is the many coloured doors with a wide variation of themes, some traditional and some modern. Look out for the dentist! Also to be found are some traditional fishing dwellings...More
