Funchal's old town is compact and easy to navigate. Visit the cathedral, museums and shops, or stop for a meal at one of the many cafes and restaurants.

Located roughly behind the cable car station and adjacent to the Workers’ Market, the Old Town is a compact area of cobbled streets, old facades, galleries, restaurants and the famous painted doors. As you are wandering along the cobbled streets you can see the cable...More

This is a must visit area when in Funchal - by far the most interesting and colourful part of the city. The doors alone are worth visiting and the art shops and galleries are a great way to explore the talent there. Plenty of places...More

Lovely old quaint streets with some very interesting painted doors by various artists, depicting a variety of subjects. Lots of cafes and restaurants. Some individual craft and art shops.

We loved the old town, especially the fruit and flower market with all the colourful stalls.. Seeing the fish market was fascinating. We also loved the old streets, especially theose with the painted doorways.

I have been in Funchal 5 times. Every time I enjoy the Zona Velha more due to renovating and maintenance which are done there.

It's definitely the most colourful part of Funchal. Many restaurants, shops and small art galleries. Look for the doors paintedby the local artists.

Crowded with restaurants this part of town inevitably attracts many visitors. When quiet the older style of the buildings can be enjoyed. Plenty of food and drink options, though all with a similar offering.
