About
Composed by about 30 musicians aged between 13 and 46 years old, the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra was founded in 1913, being recognized as the oldest and youngest Mandolin Orchestra in Europe, due to the age of its foundation and the ages of its performers. A distinction of relevance in a region of excellence within the European community. Annually, the Orchestra performs about forty concerts, with a classical music programs adapted to the mandolin of the great and renowned classical composers such as Mozart, Strauss, Vivaldi, Ketèlbey, Monti, Waldteufel, among others. The artistic season is organized by Weekly Concerts and Special Concerts, which have been developed over the past 25 years. In this period of time, the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra had performed on about 500 concerts, both locally and internationally.

Tonight’s Concert in Funchal was real and amazing and moving experience. We attended their concert last Friday and it was exceptional. A magical experience with a well thought out programme of music and of very high quality. Dear Madeira Mandolin Orchestra – just to say how very much we enjoyed your stellar performance at the Museu Quinta das Cruzes in Funchal on 24th March. We had no idea of the range and versatility of the mandolin and you demonstrated this with immense professionalism and infectious enjoyment. We bought your CD and have since downloaded your music from ITunes and it is regularly bringing us enjoyment and lifting our spirits on chilly London evenings. It takes a huge amount of work and dedication to achieve such a level of mastery and to put on these performances. CONGRATULATIONS - and THANK YOU to you all.

Culture in Funchal flourishes in part due to the likes of the Mandolin Orchestra. The monthly concert we attended at the Holy Trinity church lasted one hour and featured 6 pieces. Starting at 9 pm, it capped a wonderful day of touring with excellent sound. Culture, music, and art live because we support them and the concert offers that peace you search at the end of that frantic day of touring. Sit and listen in a simple venue with excellent sound and come away refreshed.

The most amazing orchestra. The full orchestra has performances every 2 weeks, often with renowned conductors or soloists. In between times there are regular performances from groups of the musicians held in outstanding historic locations and including Reid’s hotel.
I go to each and every performance during my holidays and they truly are a highlight of my stay.

This is the second concert that I have been lucky enough to attend while on holiday in Madeira. Tonight’s Concert in Funchal was real and amazing and moving experience. We were lucky enough to discover this wonderful orchestra of very talented musicians. We attended their concert last Friday and it was exceptional. What a wonderful evening. Such talented musicians and creative programme under amazing leadership. The mix of different instruments from the mandolin family gave a wonderfully rich orchestral sound. Highly recommend including a performance in your Funchal itinerary.

Having been to Madeira many times we had often seen advertisements for the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra and as they were giving a New Year's Day concert in the municipal theatre we decided to go along. We were not disappointed. The orchestra is mainly made up of young people and their skill on the mandolin is amazing. The first half of the programme was mainly music by Strauss and for the second half the orchestra was joined by solo singers for a varied programme of light opera and music from the musicals, all of which we enjoyed immensely.

I echo the tributes made by other reviewers to Eurico Martins, the conductor for 20 years of this wonderful orchestra. He passed away two days before the concert and his funeral was the afternoon of the performance. The young man who conducted the first half of the concert was his son. He got a standing ovation from half the audience, obviously locals who knew him, before the concert started and two when it was over, from the whole theatre.
The atmosphere in the theatre was electric and so emotional, one I will never forget. Even without the sad occasion, making it memorable, the orchestra, soprano, tenor and choir were wonderful. A must see for anyone visiting Madeira.

Is there a good homeware shop in Funchal to buy place mats?

Yes the best gift shop for price was the one directly in front of the cable car start point. The shop is next to the maderia story restaurant. I’m sure there are place mats in there. Lots of handmade local items.

The earlier you book the better but at this time of year you will not have a problem but check that there is not a German cruise ship parked with 5500 inmates (sorry customers).!
