About
The gardens at "Quinta do Palheiro" are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Madeira has long been called the "Garden Isle" and it seems that almost anything will grow in its fertile soil. The Palheiro gardens are situated at about 500 meters above sea level and were started in 1801 by the original owner the Conde de Carvalhal. He introduced Camellias to the Island, hence our vast collection. The gardens, some 14 hectares (with about 650 species of plants),include the Camellia avenue, Main Garden, Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Long Border and the Ladies' Garden where you find the tea house. There is also the Ribeiro do Inferno, a deep valley with treeferns and indigenous plants.

- mick b19 contributionsWell worth a visitWell worth a visit. It’s fairly easy walking but some bits are steep. Be careful on the day you go. If cruise ships in then the wait for the cable car can be long and a taxi is a better option. At the top the taxi drivers can hustle you and charge more than a going rate. - AndrewBBKenrickNorth Wales, United Kingdom81 contributionsA Garden full of extraordinary trees.A large, rambling garden planted with an extraordinary collection of large trees. In places it is a bit “tired” but that is only the flower beds. From the moment one enters there are huge Hybrid Plane Trees and a pebbled drive curves down past vast beds of Agapanthus and Camelias to the sunken gardens lined with Box hedges. But the surprises are the age and size of specimen trees from Brazil and Australia. A pair of monumental Canary Island Pines have exceeded all expectations and grown into towering behemoths. The lawn of the house has surely one of the oldest and biggest Norfolk Island “Pine” trees anywhere and a Camphor Tree sprawls across a vast area. This a garden for the knowledgeable and for the beginner, most of the trees are labelled, but because of their rarity more need to be identified. A wonderful Arboretum for ten Euros!Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 8, 2023
- LilacwheatyNottingham, United Kingdom854 contributionsNice exotic gardens with views back to FunchalLots to see here, including some features not seen elsewhere. We were very taken by the use of various exotic plants as edging to beds. Friendly staff and reasonable cost for a 90- 120 minute visitVisited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 1, 2024
- nsander219Chelmsford, United Kingdom642 contributionsPeaceful VisitVisit recommended by a guide book and certainly worth the travel. Quite varied planting and mostly long established. Our visit was very peaceful with few people other than gardeners encountered. A visit in February is not the time to see it in its full glory however there is still much to see. Two points - if you are driving and your reach the top pay booth/entrance drive on to the car park in the centre of the gardens (saves the climb back up!) & Be careful walking around as some of the footpaths are in a dreadfull condition.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 14, 2024
- farnhamTFarnham, United Kingdom84 contributionsLovely gardens and locationThis is a hidden gem. Really lovely gardens high above Funchal carefully planned by original owners. It’s adjacent to the hotel, golf course and near to the Palheiro village which is supposed to be nice. Very good panoramic view over Funchal and even has picnic areas Much quieter than the Botanic Gardens but still a place for garden lovers and well worth the 11 euro entrance fee. The tea house is really good..highly recommend the cakesVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 12, 2024
- Sarah bLytham St Anne's, United Kingdom2,354 contributionsEnjoyable half day tripLovely well kept gardens. We visited in April so not everything was out but it was great. Lots of little quirky paths to explore up and downhill. The three endemic birds ( Madeira Chaffinch, Madeira Firecrest and Trocaz Pigeon), all easily seen here. There's an interesting little church to visit too. There is a lovely tearoom which has excellent choice of teas, soft drinks and coffee and excellent freshly baked cakes. Easily reached by number 30 bus, 31 also gets you there.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 26, 2024
- Peter KParis, France229 contributionsLovely quite park/gardenFantastic gardens with some special flowers and trees from all over the world. Can be reached by car or bus (from Funchal) but is far less crowded than Monte and bontanical garden. Still family owned, so not every path is available to public. Really enjoyed quite walk in the park.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 10, 2024
- 123pixFalmouth, United Kingdom565 contributionsVery attractive gardensWe really enjoyed our visit to these privately owned gardens that are situated high on the mountain. It has spacious areas and it was generally quiet during our time there, just a few other people and 1 coach group. We started by doing a nature walk in a lower ravine area. Followed by other lovely areas including a small church, a rose garden, water features, grand old trees, well tended lawns and lots of wonderful colourful Spring shrubs/flower beds. We paid 18.00 euros for a taxi from Funchal, then an entrance fee of 11 euros each, finally returned to Funchal by local bus for a few euros each and it picks you up opposite the main gate area.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 30, 2024
- DocDavid176 contributionsVaried, interesting and stunningThese gardens are part of the much large Palheiro estate and village, with its golf club/course, and the fabulous Casa Velha do Palheiro hotel. From formal gardens with ornamental pools, to lush lawns, via woodland walks and ravine trails, the place shouldn't be missed by those who love gardens and the peaceful outdoors. Tickets can be purchased at the hotel or at the top entrance. There are occasional guided nature walks, so try and catch one of these, as it will be great introduction to how the area has been conserved and developed. It really is exceptionally beautiful.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2024

Our recent visit here coincided with good weather and that's always good on a garden walk around. The entry fee is 11 Euro per person paid at the start of a pretty abysmal drive to the car park. Things don't start well. The leaflet provided has a small map which is not easy to use but there are no helpful signs either at this point. We ambled off in the wrong direction but eventually found where we were and retraced our steps to the tea house. The BLT was good and the service pleasant. Then off again. There are odd highlights but it is quite difficult to get your head around this large space. We finished up in a fairly formal part of the garden near the house and sat on a bench which tipped you off slowly but surely. There are odd signs and plant labels around but many more would be welcome. I didn't come away enthused but maybe January, even in this mild climate , is not the best viewing time..

Monte is more popular, but Palheiro is much more floral and to our mind more attractive. The walk from the entrance is also much less steep than Monte and takes you through an avenue of camellias.
It has an excellent snack bar at the bottom of the garden with delicious pastries.
The one challenge is the bus timetable - in particular there is a 2 hour gap for getting back in the afternoon. You can get a taxi to take you up and bring you back at an agreed time, but beware, they will ask an excessive price, so be prepared to negotiate.

This is beautiful garden, with a fascinating variety of plants and flowers, but does need time to explore. We have previously been in spring when the mimosa greets you as you enter. The entrance is not so impressive in autumn, but the wild amaryllis Belladonna make an attractive display beside the drive. Once you get to the more formal gardens it is a visual feast from the beautiful to the bizarre. There are many flowers, flowering bushes, flowering trees. Contrary to another reviewer, our impression was of a much greater variety than you would ever find in England. We also found the tea-room open (from 11 am), and their pastries were delicious and not expensive.
Tours including the gardens can cost a lot, and don't always give you a lot of time. The bus from the terminus near the cable car is quick & cheap. You do need to check the times - there is a 2 hour gap in the afternoon - but it is very easy. An ideal place to go for a relaxing morning or afternoon.

Lovely open space, beautiful views from there. Possibly in some seasons there will be more to be seen than in others.
However, to visit the place you need to pay more than to visit other better places such as the botanical gardens and Monte Palace). There is not very regular busses going up there essentially during the weekend so there is pretty good chance you might get ripped off from the taxi service around.
The quality of the food and the drinks in the Tea rooms is pretty average, in fact we had the worst BTL sandwich ever.
I am not surprised now there were only a few visitors around.

I'm not going to write the typical 1 star review which states that the gardens are overpriced, and that they aren't as beautiful as for instance the gardens of the Monte Palace (which is true). We spent several hours wandering around, and I personally didn't have an issue with the 11 euro entry fee.
Why this review is just a one star is the utterly stupid and policy at the cafe. I queued up and the person in front of me ordered, then paid. I was next and about to order when a golfer turned up at the back "hatch" entrance and the waitress instead of serving myself turned around, and served the golfer. Instead of being British and saying nothing and then writing a scathing review, I complained immediately and asked her why she was serving the golfing lady as I was next in line, and that my time was just as valuable as the golfers. and she said very nicely and had the good grace to be embarrassed that it was a policy that the golfers have priority. I said immediately, that this was a crazy policy, and one which left a bitter taste in my mouth. Apartheid seems to be still existing in the world.

My wife and I spent a few hours walking around these gardens and found it a really peaceful experience, lots of different plants, flowers and trees to catch your eye, all of it nice to wander around because it’s generally quite level, there’s even a good cafe where we stopped to have some coffees and snacks. We’d recommend this to anyone ..nice way to escape for a few hours.

First it cost 10 euros per person to enter and 1 euro for a brochure with a map. What a waste! First the girl who took our money did not tell us that we could drive down the rocky road to the parking lot and entrance. Instead she just pointed at the road and said “you start there”. It was a difficult walk not only because of the rocky hill but we were dodging the cars coming up and down the hill. When I confronted her later about why she didn’t tell us we could drive down to a close parking lot, she said she didn’t know we had a car! So she assumes everyone walks from wherever they are on the island or takes a bus?! The walk down and back up that road was strenuous and rocky and long. Then the gardens: Nothing was labeled (we thought by coming here we’d learn the names of the beautiful flowers we see all over the island) and a lot were dead or not in bloom. We spent an hour there and more than half was getting up and down the “driveway”. Madeira is a beautiful island with flowers everywhere. This place is a waste of time. Just drive around and you’ll see beauty everywhere.

Lots of colour in the garden even though it was 1st Feb. Lovely walks through the garden with snatches of views of downtown Funchal. enjoyed a coffee and apple cake at the tea house. We caught the36a bus to get there and when we left we turned right at the exit to walk to the Levada dos Tornos and along it to the Hortensia Tea House to catch the 47 bus back to Funchal

This garden is a little miracle! While everyone talks about the wonders of Funchal's botanical garden, the real wonder is Palheiro. This is real dream of Garden of Eden. This is old, maintained well but not over... If you are interested, the trees are labeled with the species of trees. There are a few different theme gardens - all nice and picturesque. There can be found nice white chapel and also very cute small tea house. The tea house menu is a bit expensive but our quiches and cakes were just excellent!
I recommend park your car near the main gate and take a walk to gardens from gate - this 15 minutes under old platane trees is worth walking. Amazing garden!

What a gem ,- by far the best gardens around Funchal. So peaceful, cool and pretty. A very English garden with pools, topiary, roses, herbaceous borders but some exotic plants too. Well maintained and quiet. Off the beaten track which means few discover it which is a real shame. There is a bus from the centre - it is about 20/25 mins by car. A taxi will cost you about 35 euros return but it is worth it - tea room there as well.
