Well worth a visit. It’s fairly easy walking but some bits are steep. Be careful on the day you go. If cruise ships in then the wait for the cable car can be long and a taxi is a better option. At the top the taxi drivers can hustle you and charge more than a going rate. Get a price before committing

A large, rambling garden planted with an extraordinary collection of large trees. In places it is a bit “tired” but that is only the flower beds. From the moment one enters there are huge Hybrid Plane Trees and a pebbled drive curves down past vast beds of Agapanthus and Camelias to the sunken gardens lined with Box hedges. But the surprises are the age and size of specimen trees from Brazil and Australia. A pair of monumental Canary Island Pines have exceeded all expectations and grown into towering behemoths. The lawn of the house has surely one of the oldest and biggest Norfolk Island “Pine” trees anywhere and a Camphor Tree sprawls across a vast area. This a garden for the knowledgeable and for the beginner, most of the trees are labelled, but because of their rarity more need to be identified. A wonderful Arboretum for ten Euros!

Lots to see here, including some features not seen elsewhere. We were very taken by the use of various exotic plants as edging to beds. Friendly staff and reasonable cost for a 90- 120 minute visit

Visit recommended by a guide book and certainly worth the travel. Quite varied planting and mostly long established. Our visit was very peaceful with few people other than gardeners encountered. A visit in February is not the time to see it in its full glory however there is still much to see. Two points - if you are driving and your reach the top pay booth/entrance drive on to the car park in the centre of the gardens (saves the climb back up!) & Be careful walking around as some of the footpaths are in a dreadfull condition.

This is a hidden gem. Really lovely gardens high above Funchal carefully planned by original owners. It’s adjacent to the hotel, golf course and near to the Palheiro village which is supposed to be nice. Very good panoramic view over Funchal and even has picnic areas Much quieter than the Botanic Gardens but still a place for garden lovers and well worth the 11 euro entrance fee. The tea house is really good..highly recommend the cakes

Lovely well kept gardens. We visited in April so not everything was out but it was great. Lots of little quirky paths to explore up and downhill. The three endemic birds ( Madeira Chaffinch, Madeira Firecrest and Trocaz Pigeon), all easily seen here. There's an interesting little church to visit too. There is a lovely tearoom which has excellent choice of teas, soft drinks and coffee and excellent freshly baked cakes. Easily reached by number 30 bus, 31 also gets you there.

Fantastic gardens with some special flowers and trees from all over the world. Can be reached by car or bus (from Funchal) but is far less crowded than Monte and bontanical garden. Still family owned, so not every path is available to public. Really enjoyed quite walk in the park.

We really enjoyed our visit to these privately owned gardens that are situated high on the mountain. It has spacious areas and it was generally quiet during our time there, just a few other people and 1 coach group. We started by doing a nature walk in a lower ravine area. Followed by other lovely areas including a small church, a rose garden, water features, grand old trees, well tended lawns and lots of wonderful colourful Spring shrubs/flower beds. We paid 18.00 euros for a taxi from Funchal, then an entrance fee of 11 euros each, finally returned to Funchal by local bus for a few euros each and it picks you up opposite the main gate area.

These gardens are part of the much large Palheiro estate and village, with its golf club/course, and the fabulous Casa Velha do Palheiro hotel. From formal gardens with ornamental pools, to lush lawns, via woodland walks and ravine trails, the place shouldn't be missed by those who love gardens and the peaceful outdoors. Tickets can be purchased at the hotel or at the top entrance. There are occasional guided nature walks, so try and catch one of these, as it will be great introduction to how the area has been conserved and developed. It really is exceptionally beautiful.
