It you are looking for a beach town without the English & Irish pubs & want a laid back Portuguese town with good surfing, great restaurants and a bus ride from Lisbon then this is your town.Buy a beach towel and enjoy the endless beach. A pleasant breeze comes in off the Atlantic which kerps temperatures down, bring a light jacket for nighttime. You need to scratch the surface a bit but when you do this none touristy beachfront town will delight you with its small Portuguese style shops and little commercial centres, beachfront bars and coffee shops, dress makers, jewelryshops, ladies clothes etc.. €2.60 brings you into the centre of Lisbon on the local bus. We stayed at the TRYP hotel which was perfect....ask forvz front facing room. Make sure to pop next door to the cocktail bar for a cocktail.
Enjoy!

With the expert help of the front desk staff at the Meraprime Gold Hotel in Lisbon, my wife and I took the ferry across the river and then caught the bus to Caparica, which is a fun beach town. From there we walked to the beaches, which stretch as far as the eye can see. Great day trip from Lisbon!

We took a day trip from Lisbon to Costa de Caparica today and enjoyed one of the top three beaches I have experienced in my whole life - on par with Siesta Key, Florida and Nauset Beach, Massachusetts, USA, and Mazunte, Oaxaca, MX.

We took the ferry to Trafaria, then Uber to Praia Riviera where we found fine sand, clear water, gentle waves, and terrific seafood restaurant with beach umbrellas. We visited on a hot Sunday in July so seemed like every family in Lisbon was at the beach today, but never felt crowded or harried.

BE ADVISED: NO beach train runs on the narrow gauge tracks anymore. Both our guidebooks (Moon and Lonely Planet, Sept 2021 editions) described this summer season train service running along the beaches from town of Costa de Caparica to points south. Sand has drifted over the tracks and none of our Uber drivers remembered the train ever running.

We rested on the Costa de Caparica for three days. This is a cozy and lovely place. House for rent within walking distance of the beach. Cozy promenade with many cafes and restaurants, there is everything you need on vacation and even more)

We stayed in Costa de Caparica for 4 days. I'm not sure if we had too high expectations but it was a disappointment. The beach itself was wonderful. It was clean, and swimming among the waves was loads of fun. But along the beach, every fifty meter or so, there were restaurants that I can only describe as large boxes. They really are an eyesore, just as the large charmless hotels are just off the beach. The town itself is even less charming. It's very centralized in the sense that restaurants and shops are on a couple of streets. Most of the restaurants were fast food joints, and a lot of the others weren't even Portuguese. Those that were had very little choice. The atmosphere in town was hectic rather than laid-back. It's a shame because this town has so much potential.

Lisbon is great, my friend lives there so it made it easy to get around as she knew all the places to go & how to get there, it really helped that she had learned the language as I found that Portuguese is quite hard to understand ( sounded more like Russian to me)!
The best tip is to get a transport pass which you can use for the trams, buses, ferry and trains/metro. Taxis are cheap but Uber are even cheaper - from the airport to Costa de Caparica it was between 16 & 20 euros depending on traffic over the bridge.
The beach is lovely, will lots of surf shops and restaurants. The temperature was good, even though the Portuguese think it is cold, it was a pleasant 17 in the day, falling to 8-14 at night which would be great back home.
There are lots of pastelerias with amazing cakes, sandwiches and croissants, my favourite were the brioche croissants or freshly made sandwiches with sweet potato crisps. Go explore Lisbon, it's amazing sites, lively market & food halls, the sardine shops and museums. Would definitely return as there is plenty to do both sides of the river. Wear comfy shoes as you will do a lot of walking and some of the streets are quite steep especially if you head up to the castle walls area.
