Neighborhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
How to get there
  • Rossio • 2 min walk
  • Restauradores • 3 min walk

Wonderful building
Apr 2019
Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II is a beautiful building. It stands on a very historic site and in one of the most prestigious areas of the city, Rossio Square, or Praca Dom Pedro IV. The site used to be an old palace which was destroyed by fire in the 19th century and rebuilt. It then became the site for the National Theatre. The interior of the Theatre housed many artworks by important Portuguese artists. Unfortunately, however, history repeated itself in the form of yet another destructive fire in 1964! The Portuguese, though, were determined so they rebuilt the whole thing again and the Theatre started its work again in 1978. It is a wonderful building so try not to miss visiting it if you can.

Cool Building
Feb 2020
This is a cool looking building at one end of the big square. It gives the square it's anchor. There are a lot of homeless people on the stairs. I liked the big pillars. It's a nice building.

Dramatic
Sep 2019
We didn't attend a performance but this was the meeting place for a gastronomic tour of Lisbon (guide failed to turn up!). It is beautifully sited at the top of the Placa Dom Pedro IV (you'll feel dizzy walking across it) and is a magnificent building. Sadly the unfortunate down and outs have adopted it and sleep between the columns. Worthy of inspection nonetheless.

Thrilled to attend a performance of Strindberg
Mar 2019 • Couples
Beautifully placed at the end of Rossio, it is an imposing and attractive build for this prestigious location. Replacing the former Palácio dos Estaus, the delightful frontage of Neo-Classical design is captivating.

The six columns were salvaged from a convent decimated in the 1755 disaster. A richly ornate pediment has a statue of the Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente at its apogee.

We were delighted to attend a performance of Miss Julie, a naturalistic play written in 1888 by August Strindberg.

Great Building
Feb 2019 • Couples
Located in the centre of Lisbon, it is a very impressive building which stands out due to the large square in front of it with the fountains. On our visit the place was closed which was a shame as if the outside is anything to go by I bet the inside is even better.

We didn't go to the Theatre. But our Daughter needed a toilet in an emergency. In Rosario Square ( I think that's the name of the square ) there is a lack of public restrooms. So, I brought Her into the Theatre and asked if we could use their tiolet. They could not have been nicer or more obliging.

That gesture of kindness we really appreciate and I am writing this review to express my gratitude to them.

Fascinating
Oct 2018 • Couples
The tour lasted just over an hour with an English speaking guide. She was excellent and we saw the theatre from top to bottom (seamstresses room; small theatre; main auditorium; dressing room; foyer; and area for scene painting. We were a small group of eight. There are lifts for those, like me, who find stairs hard work. YOU NEED TO BOOK BEFOREHAND. The official advice is to book the previous Friday, but they kindly accepted us on the day. It is very cheap and very well worth doing.

This is a lovely building in central Lisbon.
We were rather disappointed that once again - the building was not open to tours during our visit.

Beautiful theater
Jun 2018 • Friends
Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II located on Rossio Square is really a beautiful architectural piece. It is constructed to celebrate birthday of Queen Dona Maria II. Nonetheless we have time constraint and cannot enter to see the internal part of the theater.
