Ghent was an interesting place visited on a bike/barge trip between Bruges and Paris. Had plenty of time to explore the attractions of the city and they did not disappoint. Monument van Jacob van Artvelde was just one of many spots visited. Loved the varieties...More

This is a great statue to a hero of the people of Ghent. It's bold, imposing and solid. It certainly projects a man who didn't look like someone who took any prisoners! It's another impressive addition to a beautiful city.

It's a bit off from the center, not much reason to wander in that direction. "Jacob van Artevelde managed to undo the boycott of English wool imports during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France in the 14th century"

Statue of a famous rebel leader in Ghent, lived from 1290-1345. He was a man of the people and a leader of the people, called the wise man. The statue is made in 1863 and is famous in Ghent.
