I’ve seen a few pictures of this beautiful Gothic bridge and was rather looking forward to seeing this landmark of Tournai. I get there, what the deuce!? There’s current construction working going on to widen the central arch. The bridge is no more. Only the two towers at either bank, plus the vertical supports in the river remain. No chance of getting a picture perfect shot now.

Based on the signage behind the fencing, this is being “disassembled” so it can be reconstructed better. The central portion of the bridge appears to have been demolished to remove the more modern construction that was done to repair the bridge after it was blown up in WW II to stop a German advance. There is obvious remnants of rebar on the central island. The original towers on both banks have been secured to prevent any collapse. There was no firm completion date on the signs, but I’d give them two years at least to complete this work.

Tournai has butchered this historical structure, a shameful disregard of it's heritage. Won't be visiting ever again.

This is an attractive and interesting bridge, and somehow the passage of huge modern barges underneath its ancient central arch somehow adds poignancy to the longevity of the structure. It is undoubtedly one of the historic highlights of Tournai and, as such, I share the views of previous reviewers that more should be done re its renovation.

How many structures do we now erect that will last hundreds of years? Not many. I walked much of this canal looking for the other bridges noted on a landmark, but this was the only one I could find that remained. Still, it is amazing how well this structure has survived. Especially with all of the barge traffic.

This is a great old bridge. I missed a description. It was a bit disappointing that you could not walk over the bridge, although stairs were present to make that possible. Maybe it opens only in April, or maybe they want to preserve the bridge better that way. Anyway, it is a spectacular sight, with the large arches bridging the water, and the two guarding towers.

Well kept very old bridge, apparently from the Middle Ages. You unfortunately can't walk on it so it's in the end only a good stop for some pictures.

This bridge with 2 towers was once part of the city defence system, liking the 2 parts across the river. The oldest tower dates from 1281, the other from 1302 when presumably also the bridge was build. The middle arch was destroyed by a German bomb in WWO II, but has been reconstructed (and widened) to allow for larger boats to pass, in 1948. It is a short stroll from the city centre.

This medieval gate is a site to see but unfortunately you can only view from the outside and as you're walking through; the stairs were locked and closed off when we visited. Having said that, the river area is spectacular in the evening and great for photographers!
