218 steps to the top but the views are amazing The Red Tower on the Vrifhof. Church is different and may be over shadow by the basilica next door. Lots of thing to look at Old but looks modern

We just followed the red tower from the square. The church is a bit different from all others but still pretty to visit.

The iconic red tower standing off Vrijthof square has featured in many André Rieu concerts, so it was a must-do when we visited Maastricht. Entrance to the church is free, but you have to pay a small fee to climb the tower. The church itself is worth a look around, with its Louis XVI style pulpit, murals and grand organ. Several tombstones date from the the 14th century and can be seen built into the floor. The climb up the tower is narrow and at times dangerous when several people try to pass in the opposite direction! It was surprising that safety rules were not applied, for example limiting the numbers of people going into the tower. However, once you reach the top, the views are stunning. My advice is to go early so you can get up and down those treacherous steps before the crowds.
