Excellent Special Exhibitions
May 2021
It was great to return to the Hermitage for the wonderful exhibition of masterpieces from the Bemberg Collection, a private foundation based in Toulouse, France. I had never heard of it before so it was a revelation. There was an eclectic selection which started and ended with a bang. The first room was an exquisitely displayed series of early portraits by artists such as Clouet. The last part of the exhibition downstairs displayed some of the best works of the largest private collection of Bonnard paintings. Unfortunately, by the time of writing, the exhibition is over so happy I found out about it time (sorry folks).

Canadian Impressionism
Jan 2020
Amazing exhibition of Canadian Impressionism in this jewel of a gallery. The city is so fortunate to have such an amazing home to display heritage work in a heritage parlour environment. The staff and director are top notch!

Small and lovely museum
Aug 2019
A few minutes by bus from the center of Lausanne.
Green and calm surrounding, with a small cafe/restaurant.
Some great paintings.
Writings next to paintings and books in the museum shop in French only but you can get an audio guide in English for some of the works.

Excellent Small Art Museum
May 2019 • Couples
My wife and I have been to the Hermitage many times, normally for one of the special exhibitions that it often hosts. Last week was for an excellent exhibition of British art from Turner to Whistler (mostly 19th century). It was superb. The museum has some very knowledgeable guides, who make the tour much more interesting and are in our view well worth the cost. Before afterward or during a break in your tour, you can enjoy a very nice meal or drink in the restaurant next to the museum. Or if you prefer Swiss mountain food, you can walk uphill to the Swiss Chalet restaurant. I highly recommend the Hermitage for a half day outing, but check in advance to see whether there is a special exhibition that you may enjoy.

Great Exposition & Location
May 2019 • Family
Nicely place on the high part of Lausanne, the area is super peaceful and nicely serouded by a nice park, beautiful buidling where the foundation is placed. The visit was really nice and with not a crowdedness place, at this date its an english from the victorian period and nicely displayed and the exposition are being offered several different ones during the year, living in Lausanne its great to have such place available 👍

Worth the Strenuous Walk
Apr 2019 • Solo
The gallery is situated just over a mile north of the main railway station in Lausanne if travelling on foot.

However it is quite a steep incline for much of the way so it might be better to take bus route 16 which runs to Hermitage from the town centre.

The current exhibition is called British Painting from Turner to Whistler. In addition to the named artists, there is a decent collection of Victorian art including Pre Raphaelite work.

Atkinson Grimshaw, Singer Sargent, Rossetti, Millais, Burne-Jones, Watts and Alma-Tadema all featured, as well as an interesting series of black and white photographs of Jane Morris.

The permanent collection was decent too with some good French Impressionist paintings. I also enjoyed the work of Swiss artists such as Francois Bocion and Alfred Chavannes.

Admission fee was CHF 19.

Museum in a park
Apr 2019 • Solo
I came here for the Turner to Whistler exhibit, which was worth while, although the price of admission is rather stiff with reductions if you are older than, younger than, etc. The exhibit was spread over four floors including the basement, but is theoretically wheelchair accessible. The free parking area, which requires a parking disk to park for up to three hours, if located about ten minutes from the museum and requires a steep climb down, and afterwards up. If you have trouble walking, be sure to get out of the car at the level of the museum. Apparently there is a bus that stops at the museum, which is located in a well kempt park, that you can enjoy weather permitting.

Very Mediocre Exhibition
Apr 2019 • Solo
This is a special exhibition space where I have seen some marvellous exhibitions in the past. Unfortunately, the latest exhibition on British Art from Turner to Whistler is extremely mediocre and does a very poor job showing and explaining the most important trends. I hope this is not the beginning of a trend.

Unpleasant experience
Apr 2019 • Friends
The parking which once was for paying clients has become staff parking so who cares about paying guests. Send them off miles away and they can take a bus or walk miles down and back uphill. No bags allowed. Very unpleasant and unhelpful staff. They barely acknowledged our presence. Couldn’t care less as the acne prone teenage staff were too busy playing on their computers. Frankly one can see the paintings elsewhere as they are on loan anyway. I much rather see them in a friendly and welcoming museum somewhere else in the world. Sad how things deteriorate. A few years ago this used to be a lovely place to spend the day with professional staff.
