Charming area! Visit while you're in the old town
Nov 2019
It's two minutes of your time, not out of your way at all while you're in the old town, and so much CHARM! It's not the stairs themselves, but the surrounding area, the quaint old buildings, the atmosphere, the thought of so many people before you in time traversing this area, whether by these wooden stairs or the adjacent cobblestone.

Yes, they are stairs.
Aug 2019
We came across these stairs when we got off the metro and were trying to find our way to the Cathedral. They are nice, certainly easier to walk up than using a steep street. Be careful of the handrails; I got a splinter from one of them.

A vertical city
Sep 2019
Lausanne is fascinating among other things due to its being so vertical. From elevators from one street to another to the stellar views of the lake from many vantage points, the shape of the city kept delighting us. these stairs, which lead from the pedestrian shopping district to the cathedral, are a delight.

Many steps
Sep 2019
These are wooden steps covered by a wooden roof leading up to the cathedral. It is very picturesque. There are also cobblestone steps running parallel to these steps.

Iconic
Aug 2019
If you are visiting the Cathedral, you can either take these stairs to get there and/or see them from outside the cathedral. Since I had seen these in photos before, it was interesting to walk them and know you've seen it in person. Not at much going on in this locale at the time we were there, however.

Very unique ancient stairway!
May 2019
We had just completed our tour of the cathedral and found our way to this old covered stairway Escaliers du Marche which connects the cathedral to lower city Place de la Palud. While the original stairs were first mentioned in the 13th century, the current covered stairway dates back to 1717. And it is really the most direct route to get between the higher and lower parts of the city - it is like stepping back in time and envisioning how important these steps were back in the middle ages. If only the stairs could talk and describe the history throughout the centuries. This should not be missed especially if you are visiting the cathedral and the lower Old Town.

Just stairs!
Aug 2019 • Family
I don't get it. 13th century stairs, rebuilt in the 18th century. All made of wood. Function as stairs, connect the lower and upper part of the town. Useful to traverse the different parts of the town, but I don't find it reason enough to put it up as an attraction! I don't think you'll miss out anyway if you are going to be around, chances are you'll take these at some point. So there!

Covered staircase
May 2019 • Couples
We were on our way down from the cathedral to Place de la Riponne to see the Carnival de Lausanne on Sunday, May 12, 2019, which was very colorful, noisy and a lot of fun. The steps are quite historic - records about their existence date back to the 13th century.

Just a staircase
Jun 2019 • Couples
Not sure why this is an attraction - perhaps just for historical interest. There is a section with colorful graffiti, otherwise it's just an old wooden staircase.

Beautiful place that is a must go to for first timers, but might be tiring at some points specially with strollers
