- ZitatravelLondon, United Kingdom831 contributionsBeautiful bridgeThe main real attraction apart from the lake for Lucerne. Wow amazing old bridge to walk through. Very busy with tourists . Visiting in evening as less parents with kids and prams for a better experience . This is the main area of Lucerne so packed with tourists even during Easter holidays when the weather was a little cold. Looks beautiful at night with all the lights on.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 8, 2023
- themanofecNorth Canton, Ohio536 contributionsBeautiful Set of BridgesBoth bridges of Luzern are worth the travel of going back and forth. The detail and the looks over the water are wonderful and it is a good historic way to navigate between the parts of the city. Worth it to spend some time looking above at the work.Visited March 2023Written April 9, 2023

It was built in the 14th century. it is decorated with several paintings. in 1993, a fire broke down in the bridge and touched many paintings but the paintings in the bridge heads were spared.Visited April 2023Written April 28, 2023

- NorCal-traveler08Orangevale, California1,922 contributionsAmazing BridgeVery cool way to cross the Reuss River to get to the Old Town. It is a covered pedestrian bridge that crosses the river diagonally. You can't look at pictures of Lucerne and not see pictures of the Chapel Bridge(Kapellbrucke). The Bridge caught fire in 1993 and only the bridgeheads and the water tower were saved. It was rebuilt in record time in 8 months and cost 2 million dollars. The drawings in the rafters depict the events in history of Lucerne.Visited December 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten May 10, 2023
- WatchFoxBern, Switzerland585 contributionsTake your time and dont just walk through itMosst people just walk without really taking theri time to se it. It looks like most people dont have time. What ???? Not having time on a holiday to expereince and enjoy? Yes it is like that. So when you are there lean over and watch the fishes and the bridge.Visited July 2023Written July 9, 2023
- Akshaya SNoida, India432 contributionsHistoricalWhen it comes to Lucerne city, Chapel Bridge is the first thing everyone talks about. It is an iconic monument - much like identity of Lucerne. It's just a bridge, so one might be disappointed when you actually see it but if you just stop and admire the beauty and its surrounding, this looks wonderful.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 13, 2023
- Biked_it_Liked_itSpringfield, Illinois98 contributionsBeautiful place and piece of Swiss History!Beautiful place and piece of Swiss history. Having a great Aunt’s painting hanging in the rafters only makes it more special. Painting #32 The Rütli Oath and the Foundation of the Confederation in 1291 by Elizabetha Hodel makes this a special place. Flowers are beautiful and it centers this postcard perfect town.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 14, 2023
- Munir DToronto, Canada645 contributionsPicturesque bridgeThe wooden Chapel water bridge in Lucerne over the Reuss River in the old town of Lucerne is an iconic monument with beautiful surroundings. The bridge was originally built in the 14th century and contains a tower with a small chapel inside. The triangular paintings on the rafters in the ceiling of the bridge are unique. From the side of the bridge one can see swans gallantly swimming through the water. Munir D.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 22, 2023
- gfsc5Perth, Australia1,479 contributionsFlower-bedecked wooden bridgeFlower-bedecked wooden bridge. Need I say more? Ok, I will. This is probably the main tourist attraction in the lovely city of Lucerne. It's a covered bridge running diagonally across the river. Partly destroyed by fire some years ago, the newer parts match beautifully with the old. The highlights are the paintings (stories, essentially) set under the roof all the way along the bridge. It's a busy place so not always easy to stop and admire all of the artworks but I'd recommend you look at a few, at least. Recommended tourist venue.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 24, 2023

It’s a small but nice attraction, a wooden bridge, and it takes about three minutes to walk, but the surrounding scenery can take a lot of good photos.

This is a such a lovely landmark in the middle of Lucerne. Plenty of space to stroll across and take pictures. You haven't been to Lucerne if you haven't crossed the bridge.

The Chapel Bridge in Lucerne is an iconic landmark. The combination of the wooden bridge, the Water Tower & the picturesque backdrop of Lake Lucerne & the mountains creates a truly magical & picturesque setting. The historic significance of the bridge, which dates back to the 14th century, adds to its charm. Walking across the bridge allows you to take in the beautiful views & appreciate the intricate paintings on the interior.

An old wooden bridge in Switzerland that has significant historical significance; the bridge was previously destroyed and then rebuilt; the bridge is kept clean, the stream running under it is pristine, and the bridge is adorned with flowers; it is a popular tourist attraction that practically all tour operators recommend.

The bridge is photogenic, in both daytime and nighttime and is interesting to walk across. Notwithstanding its age, the painted ceiling is a little disappointing in places and there is no English translations to understand the importance or significance of them.
Seemingly always crowded.
Plenty of bars and cafes along the river, where you can sit and admire the bridge.

Aside from the Dying Lion Monument, this is the must see of the visit to Lucerne. Some parts are affected by a fire incident. Otherwise adjustments had already been made. Nice to see art works at the ceiling while crossing it , not just going over it.

Amazing old wooden bridge crossing the river. You can see where the old bridge - saved from the fire, ends & the new structure starts.
Make sure you look up as there are many great frescos on the roof struts depicting historic scenes. The flowers along the outside of each side were beautiful.

Wooden bridge diagonally over the river Reuss.
The chapel bridge has some beautiful paintings dating back to 17th century. Some were damaged in the fire of 1993.
It has the water tower in the centre.
Lots of stunning views from different parts of the bridge.
Many tourists but did become less busy in the evening.
Beautiful fresh flowers line the bridge.
Many places nearby to eat and relax

Traveling solo will be reaching Luzern on Friday at 20:30. Can I check in to hostel and come back around 21:30 to visit Chapel bridge or should I first visit Chapel bridge and then check in? How much time is required around the bridge?

sunset around the Chapel bridge is the best time to visit it, i think.
sunset is around 9 .15 pm in July. the ducks ans swans are on the lake having a beer on the far side of the bridge at a lake side "restaurant" looking back at the "new city" is simply marvelous!!

Hi BigHugh51,
I read you have visited the Kappel Bridge and would like to ask you a question. Hope you won't mind. how far is the bridge for train station? Do I need to take bus or other train to get there or it is a walking distance. Your response is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
HF

The bridge itself was originally built in 1333 as part of Lucerne's fortifications. And after the fire the Kapellbrücke was reconstructed and again opened to the public on April 14, 1994.
