About
Founded in 1064 and consecrated with great pomp on September 26th 1118, the Cathedral was built in two stages, one by architect Buscheto, who created the original layout with the basilican body with four aisles and one nave, a transept with one nave and two aisles, and the dome on the cross vault, and one by Rainaldo, who extended the building and the façade. The building was not finally completed until the last quarter of the XII century, when Bonannoís bronze leaves were placed on the central door, which were later destroyed by the devastating fire of 1595, after which many of the destroyed works were replaced and a vast decorative plan was started.

- Richard MHampstead Norreys, United Kingdom937 contributionsA gorgeous cathedralThe exterior and interior of the cathedral were beautiful. There are lots of side chapels and intricatelyt carved statues. The star is the main pulpit which is a genius piece of carving and was stunning. A lovely place to visit and well worth it if you are visiting the leaning tower.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023

The Leaning Tower is the bucket list item in Pisa but the Cathedral is also worth seeing. - TommoMelbourne, Australia55,981 contributionsCathedral construction completed in 1092We visited Pisa Cathedral after visiting the Leaning Tower as it was raining quite hard. The cathedral is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral. Construction started in 1063 and completion was 1092. There was a fire in 1595 where repairs like the replacing the roof occured. You really must visit this cathedral as its quite an azing building inside and out.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 9, 2024
- Michael CLondon, United Kingdom398 contributionsMagnificentDo not miss this. The inside is stunning with fabulous gold mosaic ceilings and other decorations. Understandably it can be very busy and you neerd a timed ticket. Alternatively, get a ticket (shorter queues) for one on the other sites and the duomo is included so you can just pop-in!!!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 7, 2024
- dese2Auburn, New York3,497 contributionsMust see if in townWe were so pleased to visit this cathedral. You can find the long history and construction details online. We were impressed with both the exterior and interior. The ceiling, pulpit and having the chapel of St. Ranien were the highlights. It is beautiful. Every European city seems to have their special Catholic Church. They are all interesting as architectural masterpieces, and we appreciate the art. For us the cathedral was more impressive than Campanella.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 16, 2024

It’s free to enter just make sure you get a ticket first from the ticket office which is behind the Pisa tower. You will get a timed entry but we just walked straight in as it wasn’t busy.
Inside is stunning and in my opinion far more beautiful detail that the Duomo in Florence. What helped was there were less people so you had a better opportunity to appreciate it more as you were not being jostled by other tourists.
There is an audio history available for 2 euros and a leaflet which explains briefly its history. Do visit it’s free so there is no excuse

Duomo di Pisa is the Cathedral of the city, located in the well-known Piazza dei Miracoli, in this Tuscany city, in Italy. It is the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and it was built in Romanesque-style in 11th Century, but it was remodeled in 12th Century, also in some centuries after, the cathedral was restored, so it has elements and sculptures from different periods of time. Really, the building is charming and you can see wonderful views of it from the upper part of Leaning Tower and from Baptistery. Really, you should see all the views if you visit this place. Top on world!

This is one of the most beautiful churches we’ve seen in Italy so far. The exterior does not do justice to the interior. The altar is gorgeous and the original floor just before the steps to the altar is most beautiful. The pulpit top is made out of one solid piece of marble and the craftsmanship is exquisite. The ceiling and the dome fresco are very beautiful. We purchased the tickets online at the complex website. One can buy a combined ticket that gives access to all areas of the complex there. Make sure you check the church schedule before purchasing as it can close for whatever reason, but it won’t say when you are purchasing the ticket. This church along with the tower are the main visiting areas. The other areas, due to current construction, are not great to visit at the moment.

It was 16:45 the guy at the entrance of the bapttistero said that we have another 10 minutes left, as the bapttisterio and the duomo close at 17:00. We rush through the bapttisterio in 2 minutes and go directly to the cattedrale. The entrance is already closed so that we try to get in from the exit. The lady working at the exit tells us that it's already closed and that we were supposed to enter at the entrance half hour ago. (???) That's how the cathedral looked it's gates at 16:52. Incredibly unfriendly and lazy staff!
Generally most staff (also at the tower of Pisa and the ticket sales office) was rather unfriendly, so don't expect anything from them.

Amazing, spectacular anything that you have read and saw it is so..Loved it. From the train station you just have a not so long walk, you will cross the main river that cross the city, the walking itself is so relaxing and the little city really captures your imagination. Enjoy it.

You can look at pictures but you really have to be there, then you can "feel" the magnificent presence of this building. Several times, I would just stand and stare awe-struck at the simultaneous simplicity yet profound intricacy of the architecture. It's a true experience, not just something to look at.

Incredible building with so many features and intricate statues and carvings. Even the three large doors have beautiful markings. You need to pay to go inside, but when the doors are open you can look inside for free.

Cathedral is a must if you are in Pisa. Everyone knows about the Tower but it was only a Bell Tower to compliment this wonderful Cathedral! It kept in a perfect condition inside. We were lucky that organ was playing during our visit and truly enjoyed the acoustics.
Entrance is free with any other tickets to the monuments. As there are not so many tourists right now due to COVID- it’s even more spectacular

If you're in the area, you don't want to miss seeing it! While personally, checking it off my bucket list wasn't a huge "wow" moment, it's still quite impressive. We went early in the morning, so it wasn't too crowded. It was amusing to watch people trying to pose as if they were holding up the leaning tower, but it did get a little annoying after a while. The arch entrance is beautiful, but unfortunately, it's obscured by the numerous souvenir tents.

I loved this place, God said “build it big” and thus it is written.
Entrance fee was €18 this includes a walk up the Leaning Tower, it’s big but not glamorous, easy on the eye and have a look at the lectern, it’s towers over the flock. Have a great day there and enjoy it.

Can anyone point me to information about the contemporary sculptures on the modern altar and pulpit? Their simplicity is intriguing in this amazing building.

Hi!
Can you help me? I read somewhere that Catthedral de Pisa is under renovation. Is it over by now?

The Cathedral can be seen, small restorations mostly done. Frescos at Camposanto Monumentale completely restored and back in the original place (after > 70 years)

Grazie.

Hi, I will be visiting ni the coming weeks and whilst I have no plans to climb the tower, i would like to visit the other sights. Some sights mention a free ticked but i dont know where to get these tickets.
Can you help
Thanks
John
Written July 31, 2016
Hi John,
Just to back up the other answers which are correct. The Duomo is free and the only ticket you cannot book in advance on its own. If you book for any other part of the tower complex you get a free, untimed, Duomo ticket. For a free timed Duomo ticket you need to queue on the day and there are two ticket offices, one on the south side opposite the Duomo and one in the North East corner near the tower. If going inside the baptistry, etc book on-line using the official site opapisa
Enjoy your visit!
