This cathedral complex has everything a visitor could wish for; a striking cathedral church that’s still in use, and an older cathedral now dedicated to cultural pursuits, an impressive diocesan museum with marvellous religious art work and sculptures. The bell tower is also worth a visit for the views it affords of the city.

This is well worth the visit. It is very well set out and has wonderful things on display. The only criticism is that some of the descriptions of the items are poorly placed and lit up which make them difficult to read.

One of the main things to see in the museum is the crowns and jewelry of the Volto Santo, the statue of Christ in the cathedral. There are also illuminated church music and a bizarre comparison of John the Baptist head on a plate.

If you (like me) find large museums rather dulling to the senses after the first half hour or so, you'll appreciate this beautifully organized small museum that illumines so many aspects of the history of Lucca. The building itself is a fascinating example of modernism, the collection on display is stunningly lit and presented, and every item is a masterpiece of its kind.
