A beautiful large golden mosaic representing The Ascension of Christ the Saviour in Byzantine style is the most conspicuous feature of this church dating back to 12st century (mosaic itself 13th century).
Dating back to early centuries, this Basilica provides for religious history, artefacts and many other sources of information. The building, architecture and decoration is interesting to see and illustrates how it developed over hundreds of years.
We had suffered through an overcrowded Uffizi visit in Rome the day before we visited this church. This church was peaceful and the guide information very interesting. We like the “off the beaten path” churches and proffered it to the Uffizi.
Winding our way through the narrow streets of Lucca we fell upon the piazza where this church is located - and the enormous gleaming mosaic of the ascension of Christ (dating to the 13th century)drew us closer. It’s stunning.
