Housing the actual remains of St Margherita (lying in state front and centre) this basilica is well worth the climb up from Cortona town centre. It is approx 200m elevation of climb from the bottom of Cortona but worth it for the views. Furthermore there...More

The view from outside is great. The inside has beautiful artwork as well. It is a bit of a climb if you park outside of the city, but the views in and around Cortona make the walk well worth it.

This Basilica sits atop Cortona and affords magnificent views of Tuscany and Umbria. Italian Catholics have a thing about reliquaries. Santa Margherita's desiccated body lies at the altar's base.

On top of the mountain this beautiful church had much activity around it. A class was there with their teacher, nuns were walking the grounds and white ducks where roaming around attempting to find shade. The scenic view was spectacular, worth the climb or drive....More

This basilica dedicated to Santa Margherita is said to have protected the entire town of Cortona during WWII. A beautiful church on the top of the hill with lovely vistas of the countryside. Worth a trip up to walk around and take a look.

You must put this on you “must see” list in Cortona. It’s spectacular. And the views from the sight are just as memorable. It’s a small church but the impact is huge. Let my photos speak for themselves.

After a very long and steep climb up a steep path, I finally made it to the top where I could see the Basilica of Santa Margherita. It was a nice looking exterior; but not worth the effort that I had just made. I hoped...More

The outside hides an elegant interior where sparkling color combinations can be found. It would be wrong to avoid this basilica because of its position on high altitude since it can be reached by car. Great views on the surroundings from the belvedere next to...More

We stopped here before leaving Cortona and enjoyed the serenity of the Basilica. It looks so plain on the outside, but the inside is quite beautiful. They view from the outside is also very pleasant.

We walked to this church from the town late Sunday afternoon. There was a service going on and it was packed. It’s a beautiful church and actually quite large. The walk up is stunning both in terms of the view over the valley and the...More
