An important Sicilian cultural experience
Oct 2020
This is an interesting opportunity to see historic aspects of Sicilian culture and well worth it, but access is unusual! You will be visiting a private house by appointment made via email or phone (an English phone option is available). At the appointed time (but not before!) show up at Via Giuseppe Garibaldi 11, which from the outside is a fairly unassuming building whose ground floor is under major restoration, taken back to the brick by the builders working there. There are museum banners attached to the first floor balconies but they are fairly subdued and discreet. Ring the museum doorbell and you will be allowed in to enter a courtyard and up a set of stairs into the first floor apartment. There your Italian or English speaking tour guide will spend about 20 minutes taking you through the rooms decorated with tiles of different periods and will then leave you so that you can spend a further 20 minutes exploring the rooms for yourself and taking photos. A genuine cultural experience.

An inspiring, unforgettable experience for anyone interested in Sicilian floor tiles & the art of collecting
Sep 2020
The moment Claudio opened the door to the first room, I was incredulous. This is an outstanding private collection of floor tiles from Sicily and Naples dating back to at lest the 16th century. It literally took my breath away.

Claudio took me on a private tour since I was the only English-speaking individual there at the time. (Another group of Italian speakers was taken around by a different guide.) He is eager to share his knowledge and also very kind -- really the most gracious guide you could imagine. It was clear that he genuinely cares about the collection.

What's also wonderful -- and unusual for private collections and palazzo tours -- is that they really allow you to have as much time as you want with the work. (Obviously within reasonable limits: the museum is only open for a couple of hours at a time.) The tour itself takes about 20 minutes. Then, you get to spend as much time as want with the work (gaping at the work, if you're like me), to look closely so as to really appreciate the craft involved in these tiles.

This was one of my favorite experiences in the month I spent in Palermo. The love and care that has gone into this collection is inspiring.

Note that the owner has collected some other items as well but I will leave that to you, dear reader, to discover.

One of a kind

I'm not sure how a museum can be so unassuming from the outside yet is a real gem inside. There is only a small name on the buzzer to enter but what lies inside is wall to wall ceramic tiles and also displays of vintage pieces and furniture. Entrance fee included a personal guided tour in english or italian. A wonderful experience.

Beautiful tiles collection of different centuries. Very interesting guidance tour. Worth to see! You have to ring the bell because it is a private flat. Look at No. 11.

Stunning in quality and quantity

What a surprise to find my way to this privaye house museum in the old town of Palermo. Up some stairs a young man, Claudio, passionately shares his knowledge of this old southern Italian art, tile making. These beautiful tiles were hand painted. Older designs show the non-figurative design skills of Moorish origin 500 years ago. Claudio explained how designers innovated, tiles got bigger, colours less wobbly and more reliable and repeatable
I loved the big country house with a characterful bird in each corner.
Loved the dog copied from a mosaic at Pompeii.
Most amazing were abstract designs 100 years before Kandinsky and the op art designs 200 years ahead of Bridget Riley
An enriching and rare museum..

Tile Museum & BnB
Dec 2019 • Couples
Last year (Dec 2018) when in Palermo, we visited the Tile Museum twice to hear the information in Italian and later in English. We learned about the history of these tiles and how the owner began collecting and displaying them in the various rooms of the museum. We learned there were four BnB rooms and by the time we returned to Palermo this year, there are actually eight rooms. Our three day stay in Palermo was delightful. We visited the museum tour once again to see some of the changes in the museum. Our room was quite nice with a lovely array of tiles, a comfortable queen sized bed, tiled shower, adequate space for clothing, free internet and a dining room across the hall where we were served a delicious breakfast from 8:00 to 9:30. The location is near interesting sights, shops, museums, and restaurants. The train station is about a 20 minute walk. We would recommend visiting the museum as well as staying at the BnB.

Floor tiles

This is a must for anyone interested in history. The tiles range from very early to 1950s. Interesting guides for a 20 minute tour. In a very hidden spot but worth going.

Palermo: Museum of tiles & accommodation in their rooms
Sep 2019
Wonderful experience of visiting the museum and staying in their rooms for 5 days.
The rooms are very comfortable and beautifully decorated.

The great taste of the owner and the museum’s curators, their love to Sicilian art, history and culture, their attitudes to visitors made my time in Palermo unforgettable!

Incredible Italian floor tiles displayed in several rooms @ the museum. B n b has tiles in each room too. Basic but clean and all those tiles plus the museum. Be sure you know times of museum tours so you can coordinate your visit with your stay.
