Perfect for the foodies, not for the faint-hearted

Stroll around and see all the great food stalls, loads of fish, fruits, veggies, and so on.
Get your typical sandwich with intestines like the locals as a breakfast.
See how the make salt sardines and other fish.
If you like everything clean and not too loud then don't go there.
But if you#re all up for local delicacies with all the smell, noise and so on, then this is your place

We found this while walking back from the Norman Palace and even better, it happened to be lunch time. We had one of the best meals that we had in Sicily at one of the outdoor cafes with a great atmosphere.

The best market in Palermo!
Aug 2020
This is the best and more complete market in Palermo: it is active until, at least, 6 or 7, in the evening.

Sight for sore eyes.

Being a market junkie it takes quite a bit to impress, but this certainly does.Swordfish heads and three foot long courgettes vie for ones attention with the old traditional traders singing their wares for all to hear. The tomatoes we purchased tasted so ripe and nothing like you could ever get from anywhere else.Come along and be tempted with a freshly squoze orange drink to refresh yourself until the next one.Its a must and different from the Vuccuria and Copa.

The Ballaro Market is every food lover's dream, "NOT 2 B MISSED".
Jun 2019
The Ballaro Market is the dream of every good food lover. An early morning is advisable to arrive immediately after the food stalls open. An incredible abundance of fish and seafood fills the stands and the smell is the fresh smell of salt water and the sea. Plenty of the freshest fruits and vegetables you can find. After completing your shopping, it is best to sit in one of the cafes or dining stalls that just opened for breakfast. Great place that is highly recommended "NOT 2 B MISSED".

Mercato di Ballarò!

Snaking for several city blocks southeast of Palazzo dei Normanni is Palermo's busiest street market, which throbs with activity well into the early evening. It's a fascinating mix of noises, smells and street life, and the cheapest place for everything from Chinese padded bras to fresh produce, fish, meat, olives and cheese – smile nicely for un assaggio (a taste).

Entertaining with the music of the sale

Every vendor sings out to potential customers calling them to buy fish or fruits and vegetables. It is a special type of chaos with sights, smells and crowds of people.

Ballaro is one of the four major markets of Palermo. It is medieval both in spirit and in the hygiene standards. It is a “must see” place. Come there in the morning and take a stroll through the chaos — there’s no system to this madness - you’ll be navigating from lemons to seafood to cheeses. Beware: it is impossible to resist buying stuff that you don’t need. After half an hour walk my damage amounted to 3 kilos of olives, a huge piece of Corleone goat cheese, a bunch of dried oregano, ten carciofi, and a pack of red Marlboro with health warning in the Ukrainian language. The street food looked totally amazing but I escaped the temptation. What a great unsafe, unhealthy, uncivilized, and unmatched in charm place!
