About

Worthwhile tour, even if it was in Italian
Jun 2021
We visited in early June and the English language tour was not offered so we booked one in Italian. We were given a booklet, an outline, in English which covered the high points, and our guide did speak directly with us a few times to answer questions and make sure we were in the right place in the booklet.

It is a very beautiful building with an interesting history. We learned a lot and we were happy we had done some reading ahead of time. It is now a university, there are beautiful gardens, the library is in a climate controlled cellar, which they share with Roman ruins.

You will need to reserve a place ahead of time as the tours do fill up.

One of the top sites in Catania
Sep 2020
This is a very interesting and complete visit for around 90min, and, for me, one of the best places I have visited in Catania.

The monastery is quite beautiful with its several cloisters and gardens (some on maintenance). Also, the underground part was very beautifully renovated.

They have visits every hour, until 6 pm, in Italian and English.

Extremely disappointing
Sep 2020
Although the building has the potential to be very impressive, it is very poorly maintained. The staff is unfriendly, and unhelpful, and borderline rude. We were first told entry would cost 2 Euros per person, it inexplicably increased to 8 Euros per person.... we were also not informed initially that the tour we enquired after, would only be in Italian. They kept that for a surprise when we went back to reserve the tickets. We were given a very inadequate English translation, that was clearly not nearly so expansive as the very self important guide related to her Italian guests, while we were completely ignored. What a shame to treat paying tourists with such disdain.

Informative tour
Sep 2020
We booked into the 4pm tour which was in Italian, however we were given English translations to go around with and could ask questions in English as the guide was a great linguist. We did, however feel like we were slightly missing out on anecdotes and extra details as the animated guide was giving out a lot of information, much more than was in the translation.

Offically part of the university so you must take a tour
Feb 2020
The tour was great. There is a ticket office just inside the gates/portico.
You can only tour when the university is closed.
- They have what may be the first ever coffee house in the world (built by rich brat Benedictine monks).
- Lava came through here when Etna erupted. You can see how the now cold lava flowed around the building.
- It is full of culturally relevant art
- excavations back to Roman, Greek, and pre-history.

Quiet pace to wander

Worth a visit but probably better to do a tour to get the information about it as it lacked a lot of signs

I was fortunate to have the guided tour the same evening as a Classical music concert. Never ending rooms and library in the highest of Sicilian Baroque churches. The organ was well adapted to the 18th century music.

This was another sight not to pass up!
Dec 2019
We were able to explore the university , then to climb the tower stairs to the top and enjoy the fabulous sights of the city - 360 degrees!! It is a bit of a hike in the turning close stair well- but we made it to the top!! I think it is a few Euros..The Church is in a redue - but it is open to the public- it is beautiful & a must if you are in the city.
