Even our rainy day in Lake Orta couldn't dampen the delightful visit to the Sacro Monte di Orta. Above Orta San Giulio is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sacro Monte di San Francesco, one of the nine “sacred mountains” in northern Italy. It’s an...More

The hike up is the high part. For those for whom this is a matter of faith - do go, I am sure you will find what you were looking for. For those looking for great art - it isn't here. I am not sure...More

No matter where you start from, it's a long walk up the hill to this site. You can drive part way up what I recall is the western side on a road just past the tourist information booth. Once up, the churches are beautiful and...More

Sacred place dedicated to St Francis. It is so enjoyable & calming just to wonder from one chapel to another. There are 21 unique chapels on this site, among the gravel walkways & nature. Great views are an added bonus. Enjoyed & would return if...More

A good walk from Orta San Giulio. I really like the fact that old buildings are left open to the elements. Good views of the lake. Everything about Orta is good.

We started our walk from the main square and headed north past the Hotel San Rocca and then followed the lakeside path clockwise around the peninsula as far as we could go. The track then cut inland and up to the main tourist office on...More

If you are at Lake Orta this walk is well worth while. The views are beautiful over the lake, and the various tableaux give insight into the thought processes of the clergy over the centuries.

There were over 21 chapels, all different. The most impressive was the one with life-sized sculptures. It takes at least 2 hours on the mount to look at all the frescos, sculptures, chapels and views. Well worth a visit!

Without a guide, you will not get the idea of this site. Just to go up on your own, you don’t get a clear picture of it. If you have an interest in this type of venue, it is very good. We had an interest,...More

It makes a very pleasant walk, somewhat strenuous in parts to walk up the hill and look at all the different chapels.

This is a great way to walk through the woods above Orta and take in the views. There's a set of chapels to tour around, which have good detail and are easily signposted. Definitely something to do if visiting the area
