Took the ferry to the islands. Palazzo is totally overpriced but the island itself is a nice walk. So 3/5

You feel you have to visit this and the other islands when you are visiting Lake Maggiore. And while the gardens were well worth a visit, the palace itself felt a but underwhelming, dominated by wax models in servants clothing and lots of puppets. We bought a joint 24 Euro ticket for here and Isola Bella but i am not sure I would recommend Isola Madre unless you are bothered about FOMO.

Of the three islands on Maggiore, this was my favourite. Beautiful house and gardens. All three are worth seeing, of course and make a fantastic day out.

Peacocks, golden pheasants, silver pheasants, bright yellow pheasants - they are all after your sandwiches. You're not supposed to feed them, but they will show an interest in any bag you open. The gardens are "English Style" - informal, with winding paths. The palace is full of discarded odds and ends from the other Borromean palaces. There is a tea shop (a bit pricey and the rolls are rather dry), and a tourist-trap restaurant (La Piratera) that I would not recommend. In the summer you can get a joint ticket for this island, Isola Bella, and Rocca d'Angera, which is good value. It is closed in winter.

Isola Madre is definitely more subdued than Isola Bella - we did Bella first and felt like Madre was a bit of a let down, but I imagine if we went the other way we would have found Bella too overwhelming! Isola Madre has a smaller, but still gorgeous house, and similarly clean and colorful gardens. There are a lot of colorful birds roaming around, and we saw some people feeding them which is probably frowned upon. But the birds were beautiful and added a magical quality.
