This basilica is definitely worth a visit. The inside has the most amazing apse. There are floor plaques of buried people as well as some glass enclosed figures.

The "Magistri Comacini" was a collective name which since the early Middle Ages designated associations of "stone masters", i.e. architects and sculptors, present in northern Lombardy and in the current Canton of Ticino, particularly skilled and specialized, so much so that they were called over the centuries to build buildings - especially churches - throughout northern and central Italy, and beyond the Alps in Switzerland, Burgundy and Rhineland.
The suburban church of San Abbondio – finished in its current form in 1095, on the foundations of a previous church – is generally recognized, grandiose with its five naves, as one of the first masterpieces of the Magistri Comacini. Typical of their creations are, for example, the small hanging arches outside the apse and the facade. However, art historians also recognize that these architects had to adapt their professional experiences to the requests of the Benedictine monks, who owned the church at the time, and who mostly came from Northern Europe. Then they note, for example, that the twin bell towers rise alongside the apse: a typical Normandy motif.
There would be much more to say about this church: for example the valuable frescoes of the Umbrian-Sienese school brought to light in the central nave a few years ago. But here I preferred to focus on some aspects of its architecture.
The church is flanked by the ancient Benedictine monastery, which was established in the 11th century, when the church lost its status as the Cathedral of Como, in favor of the current one. It has a grandiose three-story porticoed courtyard, well restored and now home to the Faculty of Law of the University of Insubria.

Beauty and spirituality come together in this place, creating a magical environment. Wonderful frescoes in the area behind the altar. The interior architecture is full of charm, sober and imposing at the same time. The bare gray stone and the arrangement of the windows create a great luminosity despite the small dimensions of all the openings.

While beautiful and full of writings about the history of it, this cathedral feels like it has sold out to tourism and is missing an authentic flare that you find at many others.

Basilica di Sant’Abbondio Is worth the walk just outside the city walls for an alternative spiritual experience away from the Duomo crowds and like us you may have the whole place to yourselves at certain times of the day.

The adjoining Cloisters and courtyard is worth a wander.

We came to the lake and stayed from a few days in bellagio, which is beautiful. We flew from Malpensa airport so came in the train changing at Sarenna. Did the same on the way back and spent half a day wandering round Como which is also beautiful. Despite what it says on line there is baggage storage in Como. It opens at 10. We got the directions from tourist information and it was about 5 minutes walk from the lake ferry

Lake Como's city walk is peppered with grand buildings with splendid architectures and historic relevance.
Broletto, neoclassical-styled Centro Storico, Piazza Alessandro Volta, Basilica di San Fedele, Cathedral of Como with awesome sculptural reliefs, Basilica di Sant'Abbondio
are several landmarks and spots that should not be missed while exploring the streets and neighborhoods of Como.
