- Jane NLondon, United Kingdom970 contributionsDisappointingThe queue was long for this and when we got to the top you could only see part of the lake which was disappointing. On the way down if you are on the left side of the funicular you can see the town of Como. I would rather have spent the time wandering around the actual town than queuing and going on this funicular.Visited August 2022Written April 27, 2023
- Irishfamily183Lurgan, United Kingdom46 contributionsWorth the trip - go early! One of the best funicular experiences with lots to see and dear along track. Worth the wait. Two train run on a 15 minute cycle timed so that they can pass half way down Go early. The queues on way back were massive!!!Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 3, 2023
- JAW18 contributionsGreat views from aboveIf visiting Como it's worth a trip up by "train" to Brunate. You can find the Funicolare Brunate if you follow the edge of the lake, where it goes up to the village above. Brunate has some impressive views so it's a great place to visit. There are also a few gifts shops and cafes and if you want to you can explore further into nearby villages. Very busy but worth it.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 26, 2023
- WanderingAroundTheWorldSt Helens, United Kingdom5,205 contributionsNice views across the lake, but not much to do except the lighthouse (30-45 min steep walk)We decided to take the funicular from Como to Brunate in the hope to experience some views down across the lake, and we’re not disappointed. The funicular was not busy when we arrived at approx 5pm, and we took the short journey up with a Takeaway aperol spritz from the cafe opposite the ticket booth, which was a lovely touch. Sadly, we did not realise the walk to the lighthouse was 60-90 mins round trip from the funicular station so we were unable to do this walk (apparently quite steep) as we didn’t have enough time for the next fast ferry across to bellagio. Other than the lighthouse there isn’t much else to do or see in Brunate.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2023
- LarisaBucharest, Romania304 contributionsNice viewIt’s a Must attraction when in Como! The view is amazing! There is always a line there to buy the ticket (which was 6.10 eur each). The ride it lasts 5 minutes and there are several rides per day. In the funiculare you can stand or sit down, depending on how crowded it is, but either way, is worth it.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 8, 2023
- twistedpretenderChatham, United Kingdom109 contributionsStunningWell who doesn’t love a funicular railway! This one is quite something though, definitely the longest and highest one I have experienced. The ride to the top took about 7 or 8 minutes, and the views from the top were wonderful, looking out across the lake and mountains beyond. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll and a welcome beer at the friendly cafe bar at the top, a cold beer just the thing on a hot day.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 14, 2023
- Jules B31 contributionsGreat viewLong queue and no way to book. When you finally get on, it's a quick shuttle to the top. Lighthouse isn't as accessible as i initially thought, and we decided against the 35 min walk in the heat. Despite this, there are fabulous areas to take pictures. Highly recommend whilst you are in como.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 27, 2023
- AndyP1998Wakefield, United Kingdom1,066 contributionsExpect long QueuesAnd no better going down. A funicular is always a great experience and if you are lucky to be able to see lake Como from where you are sat/stood, great views. Bit of a problem if you have a mobility issue cos few seats so if you need a seat, stand on the platform and a staff member will ask someone to stand for you. If it’s hazy when you get off the funicular its really not worth the 35 minute very strenuous walk to the lighthouse unless you intend walking up it or you want a real workout. It’s actually quite difficult walking down if it was a struggle for you going up.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 2, 2023
- R_332 contributionsStunningStunning. I strongly advise to either do this at sunrise / sunset to appreciate the breathtaking views. If your lucky, hop in the lowest carriage if you want to film the ascend / descend. Don’t stress too much. There are plenty of spots to take pictures, and a few little cafes once you’re at the top 🙂Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 4, 2023
- MarioTurcarelliDingley Village, Australia376 contributionsOn top of the world Lake Como-Brunate, Cable carA great ride to the top of the mountain. It did not cost much for a return ticket, and getting on and off the cable car was orderly. Best views are in the first carriage at the Como end where you can watch the lake change shape on your 8 minute ride to the top. When you get to the top there is not much to do or see unless you book the shuttle for 5 Euro return to the lighthouse. It is here where you get to photograph the great view, or have a coffee or lunch with a great view.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 6, 2023

Unique trip up the mountain from Cumo to Brunate.
Had lunch on a cliff overlooking Cumo from the top.
Not crowded when we went. Waited about 40 minutes to catch the cable car.

We missed doing this in 2022 when we visited Como. The funicular is nothing special, but the town and views from Brunate and something not to be missed. Glorious atmosphere and views, a good restaurant up there too. I will definitely go back.

Do not go at night! Went at 5pm and waited in line until 6pm just to get onto the funicular. Can see the lights of the city and outline of lake but not much to do at the top. Waited another 45mins in line up too too
The view in the day might be worth the wait though

I would say the queuing system is rather chaotic. We waited over an hour to descend on the funicular. It was a little after sunset on a Sunday so perhaps visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

To the “Funicolare” and up the mountain to the village of Brunate; which has amazing views across the lake towards Switzerland. Not satisfied with just ‘amazing views’ we decided to venture even higher to the village of “S.Maurizio” and “Faro Voltiano - Volta lighthouse”. However the walk was too steep for us, so we chose to take the “shuttle” - which turned out to be sitting in the back of an ex-army jeep hanging on for dear life. Well what a ride. Scary and fun at the same time. :)

If you have been on a funicular, this is a typical experience although a bit crowded (tight standing room). There is some air-conditioning in the cars, but not strong. There is a little snack shop and toilet available at the bottom level. Lovely views from the top.

So.you do this to experience the funicular but it really wasn't worth the wait.
If you can drive or bus it up.
Be prepared to wait as it takes about 30 to 40 mins to queue each side just to get on the damn thing and that's out of season November time.
Then, because of how the vehicle is made, you can't even see out of it for the views.
The only positive is the price o ly cost €8 each

Took the funicular train to the village of Brunate.
We arrived about 1pm (October) & had to was for train. You are crammed in for the steep journey up.
Once at the top we had a quick walk around Brunate(not much there) didn’t walk or get the payable jeep to the lighthouse as it was a cloudy day.
There are some good views from near to the lift stop.
I would imagine in the summer it is much busier & food/drink places are open. But in October it was very very quiet with nothing really open.

What is the best time to go on the funicolare? Noon? Afternoon? After 4 or 5?

I don’t think it gets particularly busy at all, and with quick turnaround times between the funiculars you’ll never be queuing for long at all. So in terms of busy-mess I don’t think there is a bad time to go. However, for views - sunset would be special for good views, so I’d say the later the better if possible to catch an amazing sunset or dusk

We are traveling with a group of 11--would we all be able to go up together and would that require advance purchase? Would an elderly person be able to go up the steps to the higher elevation? Thank you!
