About
Built in the early 16th century, the cloister of the Abbey of Saint Maria in Porto gets its name from the Loggia del Giardino, better known as the Loggetta Lombardesca, from the Campionese and Lombard workers, operating there under the direction of Tullio Lombardo. The original building underwent changes in its use and function from the period of the Napoleonic suppressions, up until its renovation in the early 1970s. The only things remaining of the original building are the cloister, with original renaissance proportions, the layout of spaces and the elegant loggia with five arches, which has become the monumental emergence and symbol of the entire complex. Currently, the Loggetta Lombardesca is home to the Art Museum of the city of Ravenna, since 2002 the Institution of the Municipality of Ravenna. With the creation of the Institution, the museum (which was already the Municipal Art Gallery) has relaunched its cultural activities. It has combined the already-consolidated activity of preservation and promotion of the patrimony with a well-structured cultural production, by creating the International Mosaic Documentation Centre, and also an exhibition activity, allowing the results of the most advanced scientific research to be divulged. The museum moves in various directions, in order to investigate art workshops, from the wide topics of contemporaneity in a historical perspective, to the frontiers of emerging creativity and from work to promote the patrimony to the recovery of material culture and manufactured articles.

Art from the 1300s to modern
Jun 2021
The Museo d'Arte della citta di Ravenna is worth visiting. It is an interesting comparison with the ancient mosaics, since its oldest paintings are from the 1300s. There are several pieces worth the trip on their own - and the modern work is equally worth the trip. The silvery glowing "Prisoner" at the bottom of the stairs was especially memorable.

Beautiful building situated in the city park
Jun 2021
The space is really wonderful and the staff is helpful and friendly, both on the phone and in person. We went to see Paolo Roversi's exhibition, Studio Luce, which was beautifully showcased over three floors. A special mention to the lighting which was just perfect.

A wonderful museum!
Oct 2019
I agree with the review by Virginia H. I think we were possibly at this museum around the same time - maybe passed right by each other! The Chuck Close mosaic exhibit and the accompanying documentary movie were the highlight of my visit here to Ravenna. And, this museum has so much more than just mosaic art. There were beautiful (although, sadly, dirty and dusty) sculptures and, upstairs, lots more gorgeous art and sculptures. It just kept going on, and on! Take your time and savor it all! I could have done without the exhibit of plastic Lego sculptures, though. (I've seen the HUGE Lego displays at the Mall of America in Minneapolis, so I'm spoiled.)

A wonderful surprise

The Chuck Close exhibit is wonderful!!!! The video about his work was in English and made me buy a book about him to learn even more. We especially enjoyed the modern mosaics.

Excellent change of pace
Sep 2019
Once you've visited all the mosaic sites and are looking for a change of pace this is the place for you. Interesting building, some very interesting art, and hardly any visitors by comparison to the main tourist sites in Ravenna. On the ground floor the focus is on 20th century mosaics, and clearly the tradition is alive and well in Ravenna. Upstairs there is some modern pieces and some earlier religious art; all interesting. The museum is only a three or four minute walk from St Apollinaire Nuova, so you might want to consider doing them together as we did. Certainly something different from the main attractions in Ravenna and well worth hour or so of your time.

Nice variety of art

We spent a little over an hour viewing the art work. I especially liked the modern mosaics - many of which were developed from artists sketches. There were also a variety of photography exhibits that were interesting. The museum is laid out rather oddly - so you have to backtrack through the exhibits.

When I went in 2018the Adante exhibition was on. I’ve never cried so much. Luckily there is also a wonderful of collection of art through the centuries to uplift the soul including Klimt who was inspired by the Ravenna mosaics. The modern mosaic exhibition is quite exceptional.

Modern Mosaics in the city of old mosaics!
Mar 2018 • Couples
Don't be put off! There's some great work in here. Modern work, and work from throughout the 20th Century. Painters and Mosaicists working together, including Mark Chagall. Some great works, not just traditional work, either. There's a great piece using nozzles from spray cans.
The museum is also there to train modern artists is how to maintain and repair the mosaics in the Unesco Sites of Ravenna.
It's really interesting. 2 adult tickets? 5 Euros each! Well worth it.
(On the next floor was an installation about 2 Italian Designers and Political activists which was really interesting, but was only in Italian. My wife is Italian and could explain a lot to me, but I think they missed a trick not providing translations, which they had for the mosaic exhibition )
