The Galleria d’Este is a must see. There is never anyone in there but it has been brilliantly rehung by the current director who has got it all right. The lighting is good, the selection of works is of very high quality and it is not so big that it is exhausting, so that you can take your time on each work. Don’t miss the stunning Bernini portrait of Francesco d’Este. And it is well worth going to Sassuolo to see the frescoes in the d’Este palace there, including the wonderful gallery by Boulanger, one of the best unknown masterpieces in Italy.

Worth going in, the artifacts there are just amazing, including musical instruments. The pictures of the d'Este family are interesting to look at after reading about them.

The museum was formed around the collection of paintings owned by the Este family, particularly Italian and local paintings ranginging from the 14th to 18th centuries. We saw some really interesting and famous pieces and were happy to have had a free guided tour included in the ticket.

No top works, and very few works of art by the great names; instead mostly local (northern Italian) artists are presented. The works are very well displayed, and it is quiet and small enough that one can have a good look at all of the works one is interested in. Ideal time spend if it rains. Information is only in Italian.
