We visited the Arch of Clementine in Ancona whilst docked in the port for a sunny Sunday in June. We had opted to explore the town on foot and had prepared our own agenda of points of interest to visit, this arch being the second on the list after its near neighbour the ‘Trajan Arch’ and then ascending up to the cathedral. The arch stands in glorious isolation from the rest of the town in the more industrial part of the docks here, though that said it is easy to access on foot. Not as decorative as it’s near neighbour, the Arch of Clementine only has a marble face on the ‘sea ‘side with the rest of the structure being of brick. We were later told that this was because the arch was designed as an entrance to the port and so wanted to impress new arrivals. Approaching from the ‘Trajan Arch’ the Clementine arch is at floor level and adjoining the remains of the city wall. The visitor should make sure they see the decorative side with its columns and seashell decoration and the town makes for an attractive backdrop for a photograph.

18C named after Pope Clement XII Only a few steps from the Arco di Traiano. As you approach it looks somewhat plain, but the beautiful side is the opposite side and only seen once you reach it. Just like the Arco di Traiano, its location in the middle of the very busy modern port area definitely detracts from its historical importance. It looks totally incongruous in this setting.

Stuck apparently in the middle of nowhere, the history behind this structure was fascinating - told by our tour guide.

We walked out to see the two historic arches that are quite close to each other. It is always good to see a city’s history!
