One of the very interesting attractions to see at Palatine Hill is the covered archeological site at the southwest corner of the hill known as the Huts of Romulus. Here you can see unearthed remains of three Iron Age huts, which were used by some of the earliest inhabitants of Rome. These huts are were discovered in the 1940s during excavations and date back to the 7th and 8th century BC. You can see pole marks in the ground, which would have been framework for the huts as well as stacks of other ruins, although it is difficult to say what period these are from. Interestingly, the period of these ancient dwellings coincides with local legends about Remus and Romulus. As such, it is suggested that the huts here were inhabited by King Romulus the founder and first ruler of Rome. Whether this is true or not, who knows? However, it is fun to think about when looking at the huts. Tip: While there isn't much to see at the actual dig site, if you visit the nearby Palatine Museum (entry included with your Colosseo, Roman Form and Palatine Hill ticket) they have a nice video and display of what the pre-historic villages and huts would have looked like. This helps provide context in regard to what you see at the Huts of Romulus.
