Neighborhood: Aventine
Contrary to the chaos of the city, the Aventine is Rome’s oasis. A neighborhood made up of a patchwork of ancient churches, hidden gardens, private homes and embassies, peace and quiet is top priority and the vibe definitely friends and family. Take a walk around the Aventine and you’ll find a treasure hunt of surprises like the clever little keyhole at the Knights of Malta entrance (the only place you’ll find a line) along with Parco Savello (Giardino degli Aranci) next to the ancient Santa Sabina church. Keep your eyes on the 1960s architecture, several modern buildings are built atop Rome’s original 4th century BC wall.

It is an ancient church located in the heart of Rome, on the Aventine hill, next to the famous orange garden.
Founded between the third and fourth centuries, it was rebuilt in 1216 by Pope Honorius III, and restored in 1582 and in 1750. The bell tower is Romanesque, some columns of the old church are present in the eastern apse of the modern church, the portico is medieval and the the façade is sixteenth-century.
The church is widely used for weddings.
The church contains the famous icon of the Madonna of the Intercession (Madonna di Sant'Alessio), 12th-13th century, brought by Sant'Alessio from the East.
The Romanesque crypt under the church features an altar with the relics of Thomas Becket.
Inside the church are the well and the staircase of Sant'Alessio.
From the adjoining garden you can enjoy a suggestive view of Rome.
The church is not among the largest and most important in Rome but absolutely suggestive.

Interesting church to visit.

One of 2 Basilicas lactated at the top of Aventino Hill.
It’s not as beautiful as the Basilica of Sant Sabina (it was built only few meter away) but definitely worth visiting.
I found this place a bit tired. It needs some renovation.

One of two basilicas located atop Aventine Hill, just a few meters away from Basilica Santa Sabina! Houses some fabulous paintings.

Surprisingly lovely church, with amazing Ccsmatesque floors!

I was surprised by how lovely this church was, decorated in soft colors (very refreshing -- one sees so much heavy-handed Baroque in Rome). There is a particularly lovely memorial to a Borghese princess, But what is so stunning are the Ccsmatesque floor -- absolutely stunning. Well worth a visit if you are exploring the Aventine Hill.
