Exterior repairs underway!
Oct 2019
We sought this church out given that it's Rococo style is apparently highly unusual in Rome. Unfortunately the exterior was completely smothered in scaffolding. But internally it was still worth a look with some striking over-the-top Rococo features. Perhaps not worth a special trip unless you are a dedicated collector of churches, but if you're passing...

Unique Rococo Roman church just north of the Pantheon
Aug 2019
It is a beautiful baroque Roman church dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, near the Pantheon. Built by the hand of Giacomo della Porta, Carlo Maderno and Francesco Paparelli, in 1668-1685. It is uncertain who designed the curved main facade, which was finished circa 1735 and is Rococo, an unusual, very ornate style in Roman church facades.
The peculiarity of the church consists of the numerous chapels, all richly decorated. The ceilings were painted by Sebastiano Conca.
On top of the altar there is the painting of a Madonna dated C.XII, where the church gets its name attached to the Mother House of Camillians, Order of the Ministers of the Infirm.
Despite its central location, Santa Maria Maddalena is rarely crowded: whereas thousands of people gather in front of the Pantheon about 200 feet away, few manage to pass through here.
The church is not notable for any single great work, painting or altarpiece, but it is covered in frescoes and dripping with details. The organ lofts are impressive feats of architecture!
There is a great religious atmosphere, you naturally slow down and hold your breath the moment you enter the church: it a beautiful oasis and a place to step away and reflect, if only for a few moments.
We decided to stop in as we passed by and it was so worth the diversion.
Take a minute and gaze on the wonder that is the inside of this lovely baroque, and highly ornate church.
You will like it.

Lovely church
Oct 2018 • Friends
I very much enjoy visiting this church. It is tastefully decorated, whilst elaborate it is not overpowering. There are numerous amazing paintings to admire as well as the elegant architecture.
I generally found the church to be a quiet and peaceful place where one can spend quality time in prayer, reflection and/or meditation. One thing I really like is the the candles you can light to support your prayer are still real candles which is a rarity in Rome.

Gorgeous - Inside And Out

Well worth seeing. Lovely in the day time. Equally lovely after dark. Be sure to visit the elaborate rococo sacristy off to the left side too.

I have been blessed to visit many of the lovely churches in Rome. This one remains one of my favorites for it stunning beauty.

This church is easy to find - about a block north of the Pantheon and just down from the Lindt Chocolate Store.

Hidden Local Gem
Aug 2018 • Couples
A stones throw from the Pantheon and in a small Piazza dominated by restaurants you could almost miss this church if the green doors ae closed (we hadn't noticed it until the doors were actually open one day !). The almost out of place façade deserves scrutiny, but it's the interior statues and paintings that make this seemingly unassuming 'local' church worth a visit.

Another Hidden Treasure
May 2018 • Friends
This is located in the Piazza della Maddalena and is just steps away from the Pantheon but far enough away to not be dealing with crowds and overpriced eateries. This is our second visit, this time we were the guides for friends and family who came along this trip. We stayed at the Hotel Minerva just steps away Chiesa della Santa Maria Maddalena is one of many hidden treasure. Don't let the graffiti and unassuming facade foll you.

Unique rococo facade...near the Pantheon
Apr 2018 • Solo
As you are wandering toward the Pantheon, wander on in to Chiesa di SMM..
The elaborate facade certainly is worth a few minutes of your time to study and imagine the craftsman creating all of it by hand..
Once inside, more to sensational work by skilled artisans to appreciate.

So, you may find yourself "church visiting weary" during your visit to Rome. If that is the case, take a break get an espresso, (you probably need to use the bathroom by now and have figured out they are not free) and rest for a minute. But press on..You will be glad you did as it is doubtful you have these kind of churches "back home"...
