About
Official underground cemetery of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century AD. Around half a million Christians were buried here, among them many martyrs and 16 popes. They are named after the deacon St. Callixtus who, at the beginning of the 3rd century AD, was assigned by Pope Zephyrinus to the administration of the cemetery. Since 1930 they have been entrusted to the custody of the Salesians of Don Bosco.

Our guide was wonderfully entertaining and his knowledge base was great. My 15 yo and I were totally engaged and fascinated by the history presented . I would highly recommend this tour.

Alberto was a great guide and took time to answer all questions. Getting a change to experience the catacombs was one of our best moments in Rome.

I had a great time! I was the only one who signed up for the english tour and I ended up joining the one done in spanish, but our guide (I'm terrible with names, sorry I forgot) was so accommodating and took the time to answer any questions I had and conduct the tour in both spanish and english. Learned a lot about the history and construction as well as other neat tidbits of info, and the place was amazing and appropriately spooky.
Only kind of problem worth mentioning is that the place is a bit remote, and I would recommend either taking the bus or a taxi. I arrived on foot, and there isn't much of a sidewalk, so you're sort of on the road. Italian drivers are great at not hitting people though, so it went fine but I would definitely take the bus if I went back.

The tour guide was nice and informative. No bones to view was disappointing, but the catacombs were very interesting to see. Location was difficult to get to. We were in the last tour on 10/31/22 and the lights were being shut off as we exited the catacombs. I needed to use the bathroom before heading on the long trip back to the city and the staff member cleaning the ladies rest room started pounding on my stall door and complaining. I came out and she pointed to the exit, but I stepped by her to wash my hands quick. She was very rude and made the experience a real disappointment. I have not recommended this tour for other people traveling to Rome who we have told about our trip.

The guides explain why not many bones have come down to us in the Christian Catacombs and why they are not left on display: we are not a biology museum or a macabre gallery but a Christian cemetery, and it is important for us to preserve the respect for the deceased who it was handed down to us from the ancient Christians. As the guides finish the last shift, the ghuides warn that they have gone out and if someone is finishing the visit, evidently the guide did not notice a group still behind and we started turning off the lights too early. We apologize if the person in charge of the bathrooms was not welcoming. Evidently in these festive days she too is tired from a lot of work and she wants to join her family as soon as possible. We will try to be more careful in closing operations. Thanks for reporting her. (translated with google transcript)

This was a really cool tour. The guide was informative and there was a lot to see. Would have liked an extra 15m for less rushing though

We enjoyed the guide very much. He gave a very interesting talk on the history of the site. The tour gave the participants a good look at the way burials were performed during ancient times.

Very interesting for those interested in early Christian history, and impressive in its scale and depth. The mandatory guided tour, however, diminished the experience. The tours started on the hour and lasted about 40 minutes. You don’t really have time to pause and reflect. Like all guided tours, you moved when you were told to move, because the next group was just behind you. The English-language guide we had was also condescending, and considering that his entire job was to give the same tour 8 times a day, he wasn’t all that good.

Bring your flashlight: it allows you to see some of the frescoes beyond the two seconds the guide felt like showing.

Interesting view into some of the catacombs. Some art and examples can be seen. Grounds are quite well preserved. Travel to area takes some time.
