What a fantastic tour! Our group of 4 had only a day to spend in Matera, and wanted to get as good a look at the Sassi. It is not a large area, but it is dense with details and history. Vito met us at the top of the hill and walked us through the centuries, describing why the Sassi formed, how it changed, and how people lived there from the middle ages to today.
As a native of Matera, Vito shared not only the city's history, but his own experience growing up with the cave-community as part the fabric of his life. We came away with a real understanding of what makes Matera special.
